Can seat belts be switched side to side?

I have an '86 FC that has a barely worn, barely frayed, driver side seat belt. The passenger side looks like new so can they just be switched side to side? The tech inspector at the local strip has mentioned this twice and the third time may not be so good.

All I can find are universal replacement belts that may or may not fit my car. I haven't checked with an upholstery shop yet, that will be the next step if the belts cannot be switched. Thanks, Jim.

It's been a long time since I looked under my b-pillar plastics, can't recall whether the retractor reels are side specific or not.
Should be simple enough for you to pop your plastics and see though.

Yes, I'll take the plastic off and take a look. It'll be a nice break from the hassles I'm having with a B&M shifter and the 700r4 in the car.
