1989 GTUs w/ 40k
My friends uncle has a 1989 rx7 GTUs with 40k original miles on it. It is in perfect condition and has been stored in a garage since new. His uncle bought the car new in 89. It is only driven on nice days and has been pampered its whole life. I really want to buy this car from him but his wife won't let him sell it. It is red with black interior and not a scratch on it. I offered him $6000 for it and he was interested but the wife said no.
My question is what is a car like this worth? I don't want to offer more and told them that if they ever sell it I want first dibs. I do think if I offered more they might cave. What do you think. Sorry no pics but trust me the car is exeptional.

It depends how bad you want it really. When I bought my 10ae it was beyond mint and only had 55k miles on it and was owned by an old couple. They wanted 7 grand but we offered high blue book value, which was 5500 at the time, and they accepted. So 7k for that is too much but if you want that bad it is worth it, imo.

The Big Ugly!
I don't see them selling you the car, but in any case with a car 21 yrs old it's going to be hard to set a price. The fact that it's an NA means nothing, unless you are set on a Turbo II. I say this due to the fact that it only has 40k & from your description it's in beautiful shape. You will most likely hear both low & high suggestions here, but the real deal is how much are you willing to pay & how much they are willing to part with the car for. That seems like a matter to be discussed between you & the owners.

I bout an 87 TII with 16k miles on it 2 years ago, keep in mind that even though the car is in mint condition, it will still have minor problems here and there, and that these problems all add up and you will be paying extra $ over the premium you pay. Like a few people said...it is a 21 year old car regardless of how well pampered it is. I would mention this to the owner.
As for the wife...buy her some flowers?

I think in the 5k-6k range is reasonable for the car. Definetly Not more then 6k though its a non turbo and for not much more then 6k you can get a low mileage TII.-as a matter of fact there's one f/s on the forum right now with around 40k for 6800 although it is an s4.

I know it is a NA but the (GTUs) model is pretty rare isn't it? I have a 1988 t2 with 69k on it right now but this car is the cleanest fc I have ever seen. How rare is the GTUs model?

maybe it was 1300 units? only something like 100 89' model year cars got rebadged as 90'. and only 10 of those were black..
they have some leather trim pieces. no sunroof. aluminum hood. taller rear end gears. and i think the t2 trans? im not sure.. its been years since ive researched them..
basically as the story goes, mazda was going to release the 20b in na form in the fc in the form of the gtus. at the last minute because of fuel economy concerns, they opted for the na 13b and as a cheesy compensation, they put in a taller rear end.
but it still is the rarest and i would say the nicest stock fc to own.

A GTUs was a two year only NA model, 1989-1990. Only available in black, white and red with a cloth interior. Only available from the factory as a hardtop with no rear wiper and the aluminum hood. Had the suspension / brakes off of a turbo model, with a 4.3:1 viscous LSD rear end, manual windows, 16x7" wheels with 205/55/16 tires.
The rear end is shorter than the standard NA rear ratio.

Its very rare, think under 500 ever made. I believe 450 is the exact count but someone correct me if I am wrong. If that popped up for sale for 6k I would buy it that day.

This guy is spot on, The transmission also had a shorter 5th Gear(.756) as well.
6K Is a good price for a low mileage garage kept car.
Most people on here think an N/A is worth dogshit.
This is a completely different car and the owner can set the price. When it comes down to it, it's one of the more rare FC's and someone who wants a GTUs will pay the money for one...........

Pay 6k if you want the GTUs name sake, if not then find a clean GTU or even GXL and put a kaaz and 4.30 ring and pinion in the rear for alot less than you would pay for that car.
Edit: KBB for the GTUs in excellent con. with 60k mi.

A cars value is what you think it's worth. There's people out there that will pay $1k for a beat tii and say they bought a clean tii for $1k. Some people have this mind set that clean to them, is clean to any other person. Not true. I've seen rx7s people say are mint, only to find imo, it was just good condition.
I found a really clean GXL (mint) and payed what I thought it was worth. Not what others thought it was worth. Hell, I didn't even haggle price with them.
Offer them what you feel would make you happy paying. You live 1 time. Enjoy life.

The GTUs is the rarest of all RX7s to come to the US. I wanted one and found the nicest one in the country in my opinion. The car was obsessively taken care of. The car had a supercharger, extra set of wheels, coilovers, short shifter and lots of very nicely done upgrades. I paid waaay, waay more than $6,000.00.
It all depends on what you want and what you can afford. If you are talking to some 26 year old on here that thinks $6,000 is a lot of money then that is one thing. If you are talking to someone that makes $100k a year that is another. It is all in the perceived value of the buyer. I am very happy with my purchase.
If the car you are talking about is well taken care of you are getting a great deal. As a matter of fact if you don't want it I might want some information about it...
I so enjoy not having a Turbo hood...

i paid more than 6k for my modded 91 NA coupe. *actually i traded but id say the value was more then that
I say that 6k is pretty decent, 5500 maybe better but you already offered 6k so it would be hard to have them bring it down.
Most of that cost is in the cars collector value, otherwise like others have said, you can find a cheaper car .
If its got all documentation and records then that is cool.
