17 year olds!

Okay, obviously I'm 17 and been on this forum for a while trying to learn all i can about rotaries. Now that I've had a job and money saved up I'm thinking its time to buy a turboII, BUT my parents are not approving. They dont want me driving a 2 seater and dont want me stranded somewhere. I know these motors like to blow, but also with proper maintenance and care they can last quite a while. Would it be stupid to buy an rx7 at this age?
are there any other 17 year olds daily their rx7?
Thanks guys!

Then get what you want, its going to be under your name.. If you want a legit T2 try and pick one up that has paper work of a rebuilt motor. Or do a compression test before buying.

Well I got my 1st RX7 at 15 & was driving it at 16. Act responsible & keep the maintenace up you should be fine. I'm sure the insurance won't be cheap but considering the car will be around 20 yrs old may help. My son may be driving my SE in a yr unless he wants the our SpecV, so as a parent 2dr or 4dr doesn't matter if you don't drive with common sense.

Get experience with the cars and learn from your ****-ups at a younger age. Just don't be a retarded kid with it...

This is a double sided issue with me.

What i think you should consider

On the one hand you kinda have to understand where your parents are coming from. I mean your their son, and whether you like it or not they think they're looking out for your best interest and safety. You also are in that age range where its very common to do the exact opposite of what everyone tells you to do, i did it and im sure atleast 90% of other people did it too.

Also if you don't have a job that's easily the first thing you should be thinking about if you want one of these cars, or any vehicle for that matter. Yeah you definatley want your own issurance thats a given. But my point is that if you read these boards everyday, maybe not everyday, like i have you start to see a very common thread. These cars tend to make your wallet dissapear. Now im sure that everyone could say that about a hobby they are extremely invested in, some anyway, but with these cars it seems like more than half the people either have them under the kniffe at some point wheather it be resto-mod/project car or what have you. And the other half enjoy them when they want to because they have a DD. Now im not saying that everyone in here falls into those categories but a fair ammount seem to. Some that don't end up finishing what thety start or even get around to it for whatever reason end up selling them, FC's to me seem to have the biggest in and out in terms of buying and selling them.

Now on the other hand your 17. That means that you have a long journey ahead of you in terms of a life to live, and things to experience. I will say the first time i ever ran through the gears of my Rotary i was hooked instantly. I just couldn't give it up, i decided that i wouldn't have it anyother way. And 5 years later i still feel that same way. There's something about these cars and the work that we put in them. They become an extension of our existence. I constantly find myself saying okay 2nite is gonna be pretty nice out, time to go for a highway run. Its one thing in life that i consistantly look forward to because its the ultimate thrill in my mind, pure escapism and always puts a smile on my face. Like i said you have a whole life ahead of you, and these cars aren't going anywhere just give it some time you'll know what to do.

The choice is yours.

Yeah I want to wait, but I also really want one ! I do have a job that pays pretty nicely and I understand that they are looking out for my safety. I dont want to lie and say I wont do anything dumb because everybody does! Nothing like 90mph down 45 speed zones, I know the limits. I really want to get into autox as well, and my little saturn is not up for that lol
My mom keeps saying "what if you want to drive 2 friends?" Well I guess thats true, but I'd rather drive an rx7 than give a ride so people lol My sc2 is virtually a 2 seater, and only enough rear room for midgets.
Im thinking of taking the n/a path, but I dont want to be dirt slow hah

Thanks for your responses, I'll see how life pans out I guess

well you say you got a saturn so maybe you could daily that and keep the 7 for weekend autox, ect.

My experience with rx7s have mostly been good, yeah **** happens so what? I been into them since 14ish and driving them as a DD for the past 3 years. N/A wise it is dirt cheap on repairs IMO. I never had major problems just your regular maintenance and some stupid coolant line leaks. In the end all cars will need brakes, tires, tune up ect ect. Its the same old crap. Maintenance is key!

A n/a maybe slowish but its proven it last longer than most T2's. I have enjoyed my n/a for a very long time, it is just a fun toy. Learn and enjoy!

Truth is I'm 17 now. Been driving my gxl since i was 16 and i'm gonna be 18 in about a month, and to be completely honest, when i first started driving I was COMPLETELY stupid. I drove my car like an ******* and didn't learn my lesson until i wrecked.

And an N/A isn't DIRT slow. I can still beat some decent cars with only an exhuast. But really just be safe and I say get it! And try to keep the stupid behavior on a reasonable level.

^ N/A's are for sure dirt slow. My Tii was slow with exhaust so an N/A must be.

I'm 19 now and I got my 7 when I was 15 and started driving in the neighborhood at that time. I haven't had any tickets or accidents, but I am very smart and safe. This car means everything to me and that is what I think about when I drive it. I say ok if I get caught racing or something the car will be crushed, and that motivates me to not be stupid. Also, please take care of it. I clean my car 1-2 times a week and wax it 1-2 times a month. And constantly check tire pressure, oil level, etc.

If you find a good condition one, it may be decent...

With these cars, PAY MORE and get a better condition car.. Dont go for the cheapest car unless your good mechanically.

Burnt has a point, i'v ebought ALL of my own cars despite what my parents thought. Since then i've paid all of my own fines, gone to all my own court dates and taken care of my business. Keep in mind you ARE young and full throttle is in your blood. So just learn from your mistakes and take the best lessons as your hardest ones. You'll be a better person from it as long as you are still alive.

Im 20. Bought my first Rx7 at 16 second at 17 and third at 18. As you can see from my sig they all went to **** because i was a noob but no regrets i have learned alot along the way. At 19 I bought a much more practical car for dailying and from my experience i would keep that saturn as a daily and wait for the right turbo II to come along as a secondary weekend car/hobby/toy whatever you wanna call it. NAs are dirt slow i had 3. Fun and more reliable without boost but slow. My current daily would smoke all my previous Rx7s all had full exhaust header and intake mods. My grand prix gt just has a k&n intake lol. And stock its faster anyway. Bottom line is my advice would be to keep the saturn keep up on maintenance and find a nice turbo 2 take your time with it be patient and plenty of research like you have been before spending your money.

Well lets see, first time I drove my turboII, it was being pushed by three guys up a trailer. Second time I drove my turboII, it was being pulled by an F250. Talk about slow!

Nah i'm sure I'll be happy after my rebuild.

I bought my first RX-7 at 16 not running. Put some time in and got it running. I daily drove nothing but rotaries from 05 to last year when I bought the kia. Like they've said, **** happens sometimes but I enjoyed it. That was 2 FBs, a Repu, and an FC GXL. One thing you could use as an argument in your favor, since it is only a 2 seater, you won't have a car full of teenagers to distract you. I think an NA would be perfect to start with. Especially if you want to autocross, you can learn how to set up the suspension and then work on power from there.

I'm 21. I have had my RX-7 sence I was 17. I got a n/a because I was semi-practical. I knew rotory engines inside and out from reading about them. You invest in what you love. Wether it be your friends, fam, girl friend, car. Think about what's the most important to you because the car will take a lot out of your life. Mine is a vert and I almost rolled it, so I got a roll bar. My advice is to go with an N/a. Master the n/a. Fix everything your self. Rebuild everything inside and out yourself like I did. Don't take it to a shop to have it fixed because they will do something and you won't be there to see every little thing they did. It also builds kind of a relationship with the car. Don't feel bad for asking questions when you tear it apart. Just search the forum first using the "search" feature. I didn't do too much speeding because I got 2 speeding tickets and they hit my wallet freaking hard. So because I got those tickets I have to have sr22 insurance (that was all I had they were just 1 a year) and insurance is around 500 a month. I have had very little down time with the n/a because I knew it would naturally have less problems. Yeah I want more power. But making it safe and efficiant is the way to go. Plus... you always look BA when you do the swap yourself.

I got my 7 when i was 19... I agree with marshall13b, i decided to get a N/A just because it was much more practical for me during the time. I will never regret it, now that i have learned more about the rotary, the more i am prepared for a future turboII or a swap.

An immaculate turboII is hard to come by. They are out there but for a price. Just make sure your prepared for those rainy days when owning a rotary.

I got my FC at 17 as well, it was a nice clean NA with really low original miles. I'm 20 now, and still have the same car. I daily drive it and beat the **** out of it at drift practices at least once a month. Only major breakdown was killing the tranny (at a practice and me doing like first gear high rev clutch kicks for a couple minutes). Other than the car has served me great. I can confidently drive 4 hours to school and back when I need to.

Like Shika said it's more practical for me too.

My first car was a 66 mustang. Then I got the FC. Like everyone else is saying, its not a bad first car. A 2 seater are better because you never have to drive people home. Dont be a moron when your driving it though. If your a smart driver you will never get in trouble. It is possible to have fun, and drive safe.
