Voltage drop with lights on.
I’ve got a 1986 na gxl and I’ve been having battery/voltage problems.
I’ve only had the car for a couple of weeks and the battery has already died twice.
First time it happened I replaced the battery (it couldn’t hold charge at all), second time it happened I replaced the alternator, and now my voltage is still steadily declining.
when I first start the car it has 14.1 volts, but after driving for about 15 minutes (with the headlights on) the cars battery drops down to around 12.7 (I’m using a volt meter to get these readings because my battery gauge doesn’t work perfectly).
the battery seems to stay around 13.7 when I don’t drive with the lights on, but I drive at night to get home from work and I need them to see.
what’s my problem? I’m scared I’m gonna be stuck in the middle of the road (again) all because I needed to see where I was driving!

I had a very similar problen with my 87 GXL years ago. The ground strap on the starter was loose. I suspect a wiring issue although it still could be something else. Occasionally parts stores sell bad parts. Dropping or low voltage under load is usually the alternator. Check at the alternator under a heavy load wth the battery connected and disconnected while running. Also, check and clean all of your charging system wiring. Maybe another member has better ideas.
