RX8 / FC Factory Shift ****

Hey everyone,

I have an 87 RX7 GXL. Its a very clean example, but the original shift **** is cracked a little on the clear lens over the shift pattern, and I want to replace it. I can't seem to find stock replacement options anywhere (although I admit I haven't spoken to a Mazda dealer about it). Anyone know if that is available and where?

If I can't find the stock replacement one, I really do like the RX-8 shift **** that incorporates the rotor shape. Does anyone know is that is a direct drop in for the FC RX7? Will that just spin on like the factory one, or is it a different size and thread?

You will need an s5 shift lever to use an rx-8 ****.

I see. Thanks. An 87 RX7 is an S4, right? Just because I am still new to all this, when was the S5 switch? 90?

Also, I have the Mazdatrix shifter in there, which I guess I should have mentioned before, but the factory 87 GXL **** screws on perfect.

Anyone have any ideas where I could get a nice new replacement Mazda shift **** then? Mazdatrix doesn't seem to have any like the one I have. Any other hot spots to check?

S5s were 89 to 91.

Put up a wanted thread in the 2nd gen parts classifieds.

I know this isn't the answer you were probably looking for but I would get an aftermarket **** something like this: PRO Design Round Shift **** for 1990 Mazda RX7 2 Door Coupe Turbo

or this: PRO Design TR Style Shift **** for Mazda RX8

Both of those would require a S5 shifter though.

Reason I say this is over the years I've used various shift ***** from my first replacement which was a Razo competition **** to various Autozone/Walmart cheapies. My favorites were the ball style and an Integra type-r knock-off that I'm currently using. Both (to me) feel much better than the sock(S5) ****. Though it looks cool with the rotor shape the Rx-8 **** just doesn't look like it'd be that comfortable to the hand in daily use. YMMV.

The last Ball style I had was this one: Pilot Automotive Ball shift **** with color rings PM-2274 - Read Reviews on Pilot Automotive #PM-2274
Which has universal adapters that will fit anything(though I didn't use them. I always fab something up because I like my shift **** to sit lower than their adapters allow).
