Rx7 key

I impulsively bought and 1987 RX7 shell that I have nowhere to store and decided to give to my little brother for Christmas.. at one point in this cars life it was ‘converted’ to a turbo II. engine, interior, drivetrain, stock turbo II wheels, etc. etc.... had me fooled until I saw the title and realized it didn’t come from the factory as a turbo II... instead just a 1987 na, FC. It did not come with a key however. I was told that any rx7 key will work. Being; I can easily use my 1990 FC RX7 key. The new shell is about an hour away at my parents house now and I haven’t made it out there to test the key. Is it worth it to have copies made of my key for the shell? Or is this just a wild idea that will not work?

I don't think it will work. I know my key did not work in my parts car and they are both '89s.
