New to RX7s and need some advice on the first buy
I’m currently looking at a 1986 rx7 FC for $3,500. He says it smokes a lot when started and that speedometer doesn’t work. He’s says it may be due to his “new performance injectors” but I have a feeling it’s something to do with internal seals. I don’t have a problem with fixing it up but don’t want to buy a whole engine all together. I’ll list what he has done to it down below. Please let me know what you think and from what I see in pictures....it looks like in decent condition. He also said it sat for 8 years before he bought it.
This is my 86 fc rx7. It has the stock 13b rotary engine. Has lots done!
Pros: mazda cold air intake new performance injectors new battery new thermostat/coolant new spark plugs new fuel pump have brand new fuel filter new tires lowered with performance springs good heater/power steering has rare aftermarket wheels has a bbr exhaust system has aftermarket temp gauge interior is in good shape for age good clutch/breaks 4wheel disk breaks wired for subs and aftermarket radio has good lights all around has clean title and many more...
Cons: bad tags runs a little rough but could be something simple.
speedometer doesn’t work.
Air conditioning needs work
Thanks, No low *****.

Are you the guy who posted this on the subreddit awhile back, or is this an unrelated post by someone viewing the same car?
I'll give the same response I gave in the subreddit: Performance injectors aren't a thing for NA Rx-7s. The stock fuel system flows more than the engine will ever need unless crazy porting has been done.
It is possible that the internal seals are blown. If the smoke is blue it's oil, grey and gassy is fuel, white steam is coolant. If it's running rich, then it could be something other than seals. Burning oil or coolant is a definite seal problem.
All Rx7 FCs have a cold air intake from the factory.
Either a lie, or a gross misunderstanding of how engines make more power.
Seems like he's tried most of the simple things and is now selling the car.
Usually cheap and easy to fix
Usually more expensive than you'd expect to fix, unless you're equipped to do the work yourself.
^^^ Is this a mandatory requirement when writing a classified ad for a car with obvious problems?
Try and get the owner to let you do a compression test and then if the results are good take it from there. If it:
- Blows blue smoke / black smoke
- Blows white steam and / or overheats
- Fails the compression test.
Factor in the cost of a new engine and then offer a price you're comfortable with factoring in that likelihood. Eg. $2000 for rebuild near you, you want to pay $3500 all in, so you offer $1500. If he doesn't take it, walk away. If he doesn't allow the compression test, offer that same price you calculated earlier. If he doesn't take it, walk away. There are always other Rx7s around, even if they are getting rarer. There's no sense spending money on one that you will have to throw more money after rather than saving and getting a healthy one.
The above only applies in the case that you can't find a better condition running car near you, since this is almost always the cheaper option. Ask how I know.

speedometer is a cable, so it either needs a new cable or they bumped it enough to pull it our of the speedo while they were screwing up the engine...
