1988 convertible with a bad engine worth anything?

My almost-one-owner car with 130K miles has exhaust gas in the cooling system according to my mechanic, so the engine must be replaced. This is something I'm not inclined to do, although I really have loved the car. My question is what is it reasonable to ask someone to pay for it? It's in fairly good physical condition given its age. The driver's seat is well worn. It's been my daily driver. I cover it every sunny day.
I guess a related question is how to go about selling it.
I'm really sad about this right now.
I'm in the San Jose area if it matters.

How much is he asking? I'd say at this point in time fc bodies are getting harder and harder to find ... especially if they're in good shape. I wouldn't pay more then hmmm.... 1000-1500. Keep in mind that ANY rx-7 will need engine work. I'd say if the body is in good shape ... even will a blown engine. .. it still has an engine. I bought my shell for 700 CAN without an engine. Use your best judgement. If you love the car then be pragmatic about it and weigh out the pros and cons.

Pros:
You say the body is in good shape.
It still has the block.

Cons:
Rebuild is necessary.
Depending on how mechanically inclined you are ... it can be a very expensive ordeal.

Use your best judgement. Not knowing anything about the engine puts you in a vulnerable position. My best advice, find a rotor head that knows his **** and take him along for the car inspection. He can do some quick testing to check the condition of the engine. And be prepared to buy tools lol ... socket set, compression tester, multimeter, etc etc. lol. Good luck bro ... you're probably gonna need it.

EDIT: Sorry I;m drunk right now and just realized you already bought it. If you're trying to sell it wait for a teenager to come along and tell him the car has triangle pistons that were forged in wizard ****.

Its honestly worth more in pieces than whole. And i doubt the engine needs to be replaced, just a bad coolant o-ring, worse case you'll need an iron because a bridge collapsed
In all honesty, you could probably have the engine rebuilt for the same as you could sell it for, maybe more. IMO i say get it rebuilt if you enjoy the car that much

Thanks, both. I'm sure you're right about parts. The wheels alone are beautiful. A local recycler offered $190! I'm insulted. I'd like it to go to an enthusiast.
The shop says $6K for a rebuilt engine. Which is more than I wanted to spend on it. From what I can tell it's not going to be worth that much if I do it. And I need a reliable daily driver, which this one has been but is no longer, and I decided not to keep it as a hobby car that only gets driven weekends.
Should I list it on another forum?

6k sounds about right

You can still make more money parting it out versus selling it whole, but thats up to you if you want to go through the hassle of it.

If you want to sell it as a shell you can, price varies depending on where your are, car, weather, price of gas, how good you hair looks etc etc

Throw it up on sale on craigslist and on here in the parts section, someone is bound to pick it up
