What to do about vehicle registration/emissions with 20B?

Im seriously thinking about doing an engine swap with my FC, and I have it narrowed down to either a LT1/T-56 swap, or a 20B. Since the 20B was never available in the US, what do you do about getting the car registered and emissions tested? I was under the assumtion that you needed to show proof of what vehicle your engine was originally from, and they tested it from there. How would one go about doing this (all legally.. ) with the 20B?

It changes, state by state, you might want to ask in the regional forum :O

My car is under hotrod for emissions. If you engine has a bigger displacement and the engine was not sold in that car you are allowed to put it in hotrod for emissions in ontario canada. You should check with your emission places.

in california we're supposed to take it to a "referee" and he is supposed to look at the swap make sure its legal. as it usual with ca these guildlines have nothing to do with the actual emissions, ie you cant put a truck motor in a car, but a big visual.

the 20b could potentially pass, because its newer (cant swap an older engine into a newer car), and has the same smog info, the problem would be if the engine is on the referee's list

in reality nobody will notice the engines different, as long as it passes out the tailpipe.

you need to check with your laws in pa, i'm sure its totally different

Just do what I do and don't mention anything about it. Most people don't know what a Rotary engine is, much less the difference between a 13b and a 20b

This is fairly true. I'm in CA US too. We can legally swap engines with another vehicle sold in the Domestic US as the same model year or newer of the same vehicle class. This outcasts the 20B.

A clean breather with well-engineered and obscured ignition harness, with shielded exhaust manifold (foil plate, not wrap) may slip through inspection. Bring a respectable vehicle that does not threaten the certifier's license, and walk with a good smog another 2 years.

actually this is the potential problem with the 3 rotor in ca, the smog machine will read the rpms higher than reality due to the fact that the 3 rotor is really a 6 cylinder piston engine

thats actually a big problem bacause if you are out of "RPM range" at idle you will not pass smog no matter how clean your emmisions are (ask me how i know). wait a sec.......... unless they are clipping the lead to your tach signal (that would signify a "V6" type signal) you should get hte same RPM as normal.... they clip the rpm sensor to a spark plug wire so they should not have any problems with seeing a wrong idle (as long as the testing equipment is in rotary mode). RPM's should read normal now that i think about it. the problem i do see myself running into is A) visual and B) Having more "exhaust flow" than i should.... meaning that although the percentages may be within spec, your engine is flowing 1.5X more exhaust (regardless of how clean it is) which i think the dynos do account for or measure somehow. this will not be easy trying to get a 20bFD to pass in CA!!!!! im not sure that you would be able to get it to "legally" pass in CA... even with a completely inept tech.... not to mention that there is a huge ******* stamp across the top of your motor that says '3ROTOR' hehehehe. i wonder if you could pull something like "well this was a special edition FD, only 20 released that year with the 20b motor ... its like a mustang cobra rouch edition techie dude" maybe they will believe it? i dont know, you probably cant pass "legally"
