Turbo opinion??

Hey guys n gals. Greetings from australia, I'm rick.

I have my build thread over on rx8.com under Frankenstein

I'm trying to fit a borg warner s475 in the rx8 but I just can't fit it where I want to ( back in line with the wheels).

Can anyone suggest a dimensionally smaller turbo that is a great match for the 20b?
Ideally a V-band style.

I am keen on drift racing, so early mid revs boost is ideal.

What is your power goal?

If you are happy with 600whp or so then a GT40 is a good choice.

Thanks. Yeh 5-600 is fine with me. Daily driver plus some weekend drift racing. I hear the BW s475 spools early considering it's mammoth size, but I'm not sure it'll be suited to drifting.

Run a s475 with a .91 housing and you will be fine. Biggest role is turbine housing size. Run a turbo manufacture that has larger turbine wheels and run a small housing like the borg warners. You willl still "flow" as well as spool quickly

S475 is a terrible choice for 5 to 600rwhp with an intention of drifting.

EFR 9180 with a 1.0 vband is hands down the best choice for what the OP is after.

And that 80mm exhaust wheel wouldnt be pushing it at 600hp on a 3 rotor? I thought that turbo was ideal for the 13b's

I agree I think this would be a good choice as well, the boost would probably be instant, and these turbos flow a ton of air. on a drift car you want the best low end response possible.

So I gather the s475 is more of a drag racer turbo? Making closer to 900-1000hp,?

Is there much merit in going with a smaller housing on the s475? It's just a budget thing for me, I'm looking for a inexpensive option as I have spent sooo much already.

Yes they have smaller housing available for fitment.
Its not a "drag only " turbo by anymeans and it will make 500hp on about 10-12 psi.
A smaller turbo will be more responsive for drifting but will be restrictive if you want anything more than 600hp in the future.
A comparable turbo to the borg warner efr9180 would be a borg warner s366, though they do have their differences a s366 can be aquired for around 700$ vs the 2k price tag of a 9180 or even the 1300$ tag of a s475.
I personally would grab a s366 if all you want is 5-600whp and do some drifting
As always keep a eye out for the used deals.

I think the turbos you want to "swap" for are over $1k more than yours lol.

And for reference, the BW efr 9180 is like 2100 (will be buying from Elliot once I get my other dang parts in the mail).

You could always buy my gt4088r so I can put more $$ into my 20b build .

I went with an s480 with a smaller housing and AR. Downsized from the 1.32 T6 down to a 1.15 T4.

I only plan to run 650hp on the street as well. Yes, the turbo is definitely oversized for the horsepower requirements, but I like the idea of being able to make ~650 at lower boost levels and less heat with the larger turbo. I'm guessing it should break 600 @ around 15psi and easily make 800hp in the future or at 24psi+

So far, I've had positive manifold pressure ~6-7psi with a little as 40% throttle at 3.8k rpm.

I don't think there's much to worry about with a monster turbo on the 20b. This thing puts out so much exhaust energy. If you're drifting or racing you're not going to be needing to hit full boost at 2K rpm!
