Need help with 20b FD?

Ok guys, here it is I am thinking hard about a 20b conversion. I have a FD that I am working on but what I dont have is 35K to let some one like MVA do it for me. I know that there the best and I will need there advice but I just cant aford that much $. Ive been checking on some prices and this is what I found: 20b street ported, extra dow pinned and rebuilt for 6700.00,since I plan on my high boost being 15 to 17psi I would like to stay with the stock twins, I have a intercooler, 2000.00 for microtech and coils if needed,1500.00 for fuel rail ect.,the conversion I plan on doing my self and probely go with the cheaper conversion, 500.00 to a 1000.00 for a good tuner. I know I left out a few things like clutch, flywheel, tranny and rearend but I hope that is everything just to get the car moving. MVA put 570 to the wheels at 12psi I hope for something similar at 15 to 17psi. Please help me get start the right foot can I expect to do a 20b conversion with what I have here?

Thanks Channon

No, you can't build the car with what you mentioned, because there is still the engine subframe issue, you have not addressed the cooling problem, the stock 20B thermostat housing will not clear the hood, and the stock 20B oil pan will not clear the FD front sway bar. These are actually the main issues on the conversion, as opposed to the other things that you mentioned.

The 20B conversion is not a bolt-on kit from GReddy, it's a custom process like building a unique hotrod. How you build it is up to you, and much like hotrods, no two 20B conversions are alike. Feel free to search this 20B forum for ideas.

I know that a 20b conversion is not a bolt on kit. Im not some punk that just watched fast and furious. The subframe, oil pan, and hood I plan on working out with MVA, ect. Can the cooling problem be fix by a larger radiator? Thanks

I am not sure how MVA will handle the motor mounts, subframe, etc. They have a *GEM* there, and I believe they are trying to decide if they will sell those to the public. Rather, they may want people to come in to use their parts. (Good business decisions, sucks for you type of thing).

Either way, I have a few 20B conversion items I need to sell. I have:

- Throttle Body attachment
- Thermostat attachment
- Swaybar spacers
- Radiator & Fans
- Intercooler
- Fitted covertray for Intercooler / Radiator
- Power Steering cooler

All parts are the same used for the Pettit Racing 20B conversion. The IC, Rad, ThrottleBody elbow, thermostat piece, etc.

call RX-7 heavan here in new Zealand
ask for Tony
0064 9 274 0669 (remember the time difference)

he has a 20B bat, works fine, says handling is fine etc also, NZ labour rates are is half of that in the US and the $NZ is only worth hlaf of the US$ too so its about a 1/4 the price here.

Call Tony, he may be able to make the/modify the parts you need and send them to you.

Hope this helps.
His 20B S6 ran 540HP ATW on 13psi I think it was running a S6 box that seemed to be fine I think.

Any one have any details/pictures of 20B -> FD installs where the motor has been taken back down the tunnel a way?

I'm just waiting on a couple of small bits before my install kicks off. We're looking to take the gearbox back about 6 inches so the front cover will be in the same place as the 13B's is in the stock location. Hopefully this will keep the weight closer to where it 'should' be and a bit lower than would otherwise be the case if it had to clear the rack and so fourth...

The main problem with all this is the inlet manifold; the stock 20B UIM fouls the firewall. Does any one know of any solutions to this that already exist? Pictures would be great. I seem to recal reading that Petitt do a 'normal' install and another which involves mounting the motor about 6 inches further back than the stock g/box location allows....?

Thnx,
Rich

They use the stock 20B oil pan, FD subframe, etc...but modify the shift linkage so it's in the almost identical location of the stock shifter. Price is $14K for the install...ECU, engine, car, etc...not included.

Thnx Michel, some interesting stuff there :-)

We had a 20B on an FD tranny 'in' (on the jack so we could shift it about easy) an FD to check clearance when mounting the triple that far back - which is what we are gonna do; from recollection using the stock inlet manifold looked impossible without chopping the firewall if you want to take it back any more than 4 or 5 inches...

You know Flint, there's always the Hogan intake manifold for the 20B...Not sure how much lower it sits, but it looks to be a bit down from the stock UIM. Price is up there though...$2K+USD if I remember correctly.

I'd dry sump the thing too if possible. That'll give you a bit more room for things. Mazda Comp has a new front dry sump adapter too. I haven't looked at it too carefully. Just noticed it was now being offered.

Cheers RX7TT95.

Any ideas where there may be pics of the Hogan manifold? checked the Hogan site and couldnt see any pics or listing for the 20B...

I dont think dry sumping will be necessary at the moment. Although its deffo some thing we have/are still considering...

Cheers,
Rich

Yeah, I still have all the parts... IronMdx has asked many times, but I have failed to give him information. What are you looking for? I will see if I can get off my *** and get it out to people.

IronMdx gets first dibs if he is still interested. Let me know.
