Cool project and that will be one quick 911. I have toyed with doing this to a 914 or 911.

Seems like you'd end up with a whole lot more oversteer in a 911 with all the extra weight.

Actually the 3.8L porsche turbo block was probably ~200 lbs more than the 20B.

That's actually one of my motivations for the engine swap. If I was building a race car instead of a mostly street car, then I'd have chosen a high hp 13B application for ever better weight re-distribution.

I thought this would be a really nice track car but it will be a very impressive street car good luck with the build!

Hey Dave, sorry that I missed out on the pre-wedding festivities... Hope all is well, we should catch up soon...

Most things are actually in place, once the ECU is wired up, she's ready to start. But there are just tons of little things with a project like this... Hopefully some time in May she'll run.

Cool. You're Dan's cousin? He's doing a pretty good job, taking care of my project. It's taken a while, but it's close. Maybe get her running by next week, I hope.

I love it!! This is like the bigger, faster brother to my '75 13B-T 911 Targa.

Subscribed and looking forward to future developments with the project!
Best,
John

quick update: engine rebuild needed

we had the engine running briefly, tested the cooling system, it seems to stablize around 190 degrees with the fans on and the car idling, the coolant flow seems to be reversed (pulling out of the left side when looking at the front of the engine), can anyone confirm that this is the case? Any potential problem with the reversed flow through the engine?

Havent tested it with car running at speed yet, this is because SOMETHING WAS SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE while we were running the car with the intercooler off. I don't know what happened since I was inside the car, there a couple of ppl standing near the engine while this happened trying to fix the throttle cable...

Obviously this sucks, the rear rotor and housing was destroyed, the turbine wheel had a small nick (haven't seen it) but should be fine. I'll post the pics of the rotor/housing damage in a couple of days when I get my camera back.

The only good thing is that I'll be able to get the rotors clearanced, scalloped, and balanced while I have everything out, and stick in some ALS apex seals. The e-shaft, irons, and the other 2 rotors/housings are all in beautiful shape.

Haha, you know it, Dave. Huge thanks for helping me putting the motor back together, it was funny that I kept making a mess in your garage and you kept cleaning up after me. :/

The engine is back in the car, just waiting a couple of little things (one of them is actually a fairly long piece :p ). The turbo manifold was reworked a little bit, should've taken some pics of it, such a nice piece of work.

Can't wait to get it running again, maybe later next week, I hope.

update - new engine is in

So along with Dave's help (rx-heaven), we put the engine back together a few weeks ago. And it has been installed back into the car. This is with used rotor housings, RA superseals, extended streetport, moderate exhaust port, CLR balanced, bevelled, and race clearance'd 20b rotors, stock corner seals without the rubber plugs (which would've fallen into the bigger intake ports).

I stopped by the shop today, and we started the car right back up, compression seems health, no oil/water burning symptoms. Haven't checked oil pressure yet, since the gauge is not hooked up. :-\

The idle sounds almost like a bridgeport, and reving it to 3-4K rpm in neutral sounded amazingly good.

Cooling systems seems to be doing it's job fine, for idling, we'll see how it is under load soon.

Some minor work still remains, but should be on the road in a week or two. A couple of crappy iphone photo teasers are attached.

more pics Fred and an update!

My junk should be running by Sunday..... We'll have to line up against each other once we both break them in October I should be good to go.... I'll maybe need a 100hp nitrous shot on hand to level the playing field.

What type of power will this combo put down? I have a nice Nikon camera if you want to take some pics of the car.

Yeah, I'll need at least a month or two to break it in and work out the kinks. The weak link could be the tranny, even though I spent $7K on the rebuilt G50-03 with racing R&P and the Guards LSD. It's much stronger than what most V8 conversion guys use which is the 915 trannies or even 901, LOL. But I don't think porsche boxes are meant for hard drag launches.

Having said that, my goals aren't too lofty, the key is low boost and relatively high rev. I'm shooting for 550whp on 10psi, and 650+whp on 15psi (with water injection), or 130-140 trap speed in the 1/4 mile. I'd really like to enjoy the car for a while before I turn up the boost and work out the tuning and safety measures.

Look forward to lining the cars up and do some photos and quick runs, I can image ppl getting a kick out of that, with a ls7 v8 FD, vs. a 20B rotary Porsche, hehe.

Will try to pick up the car next week, and weigh it while I'm at it.

I'd go with Auxilary Meth injection. The results are way better than water injection.

Damn that is a sweet *** project. That body style is the best Porche has ever made, just pure sex. Have any more pics of the rest of the car?

The car is running ok, put about 100 miles on it so far. Still needs a lot more tuning, and a quieter exhaust. Going to be making some custom mufflers...

Oil cooler is not doing its job at all, I've seem oil temps as high as 240ish, not even driving the car that hard. Ordered an other Setrab oil cooler, 22"x6.5"x2" core, that should help. Water temp is ok, varies between 200-208 or so when cruising in 70 degree temp.

Here are some more photos..
