Input needed...

Ok guys I've been looking at a 20b, asked a few questions and this is the response I got back.. The question is should i buy it? 2500.00 shipped

This is a C code engine. We do not have the compression numbers, however here is the best description we can give you. On one rotor when cranking you have 2 light pops of compression out of 3.All the apex seals look okay on that one. On rotor two you have 1 light pop of compression, all the apex seals look okay on that one also.On the third rotor we have no pops of compression, 1 apex seal is missing and another apex seal looks scored. The 3rd apex seal on rotor 3 looks okay. Shipping would cost you $300.00 to a commercial address in MN. It is not rough, it just was never cleaned because it is being sold as a core/parts engine. Mileage on engines in Japan is an average of 25,000-50,000. Thank you.

sounds kinda risky. my bet is you will need a new rotor, new housing , and possibly (since it's been sitting) new irons. i guess it depends on how much of a project you want.

yeah ... I think I'll pass. The idea of buying a motor cheap may sound nice, but the potential of buying new housings and iron doesn't sound cool.

just think of it as an opportunity to go with REW housings, get some porting done, and know what you have internally for peace of mind.
pretty much when anybody buys a 20b, its gonna need a rebuild, so make sure you add that cost in for your project, there are a few who got lucky though. i'd be tempted to get it if i were you...

This deal is a LOSE, LOSE proposition.
You CAN buy a perfectly good running 20b engine for arround $ 3500 00.
Install it as is & drive it for a while till the day You NEED more power.
With the Turbos on non-seq. you can get close to 400 hp. & more than 330 Lbs/ft. of torque out of a bone stock block.
The day You open it up for mods., You will need to replace only soft parts, port, & what ever the level of performance You're looking for requires.
On the other hand, by Your own admition, the #2 Rotor spit out an apex seal :
That means that the Rotor Housing IS GONE, and the ROTOR IS DAMAGED.
NOW AT THE VERY LEAST, You are looking at : 3 new Rotor Housings, because you'r not going to replace 1 Rotor Housing w/ a new one, and leave 2 used ones in your FRESHLY "OVERHAULED" engine. ......... Now You need 9 new apex seals.
Otherwise You'll need 3 new ones plus the 6 original ones that respectivly came out of those "Used" Housings, back in their ORIGINAL positions.
You'll also be needing a replacement Rotor, plus a guaranteed bearing swap.
Next come all the soft parts, 2 gasket kits, and possible Starionary gear's bearing replacement. Not to mention, the replacement rotor will probably NOT match the other 2 rotors weight, and need some static balancing.
And after all of this. .........End up with a HALF *** rebuild, or a "Premature" FULL OVERHAUL to save Your investment.
Either way, it will cost You PLENTY MORE than buying a good one.

Just an obserbation from someone who does this for a living.
