help picking parts for 20b fd

ok basically, i need a little help in deciding on a few parts for my 20b FD. i have the motor (in a front clip) already and i am going to run it in stock formation for now. im trying to buy parts that will let me upgrade without too much hassle. the future plans with the car are having BNR do a stage 3 on the twins, and mostlikely a streetport or something. as of now im going to be using the stock ecu and intercooler from the 20b.

now that you have an idea where im trying to go, if you could give me some advice on a few parts that i could use with a stock setup and later with a higher HP setup that would be great.

ok first thing is a radiator: im thinking KOYO but do any of the other more expensive readiators provide better cooling? http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=352&1=354&2=-1

next thing would be a fuel pump? what would you recomend for a stock 20b setup, and for a 500-600 HP setup? http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=211&1=260&2=-1

for exhaust, ive been thinking about a Racing Beat dual, catback, and pettit high flow cat..... any thoughts?

lastly, a clutch? im not sure there would be one best suited for the stock motor and a high HP motor.... what can people recomend?? this car will be a street car so id like somehting "streetable" http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=206&1=241&2=-1

thanks for your input! -heath

for the fuel pump use the stock cosmo one if you got it with your clip, if not the bosch and the walbro will work for stock ecu power.

my is running happily with an act extreme pressure plate and a stock disc

you may need a bigger radiator than the koyo, the 20b gets HOT

the exhaust is kinda up to you, i would do a little reading and see which look and volume level you like, the 20b will sound better than the 13b with the same exhaust

The stock ECU isn't such a good idea in my opinion. For the trouble it will be to get it working, you could probably work the same hours at MacDonald's and buy a cheap standalone EMS like an LTX-12.

I recommend taking measurements on your car, and ordering a custom radiator from Griffin. They will help you choose the correct construction based on your engine output and driving requirements. They make an FD replacement radiator that may work, so it wouldn't hurt to call and see what they have to say. Griffin can make a much better radiator than anything you can get from Fluidyne.

The Mocal oil coolers will help. Just be sure to mount them in a good place. A friend of mine put them very low by each headlight on his SPO FD, and ended up ripping off one of them at Daytona, which resulted in a blown engine.

The Walbro is a cheapie fuel pump, and will probably choke around 400hp under boost, depending on your setup. It will work fine for now, but if I were you I would stick with the stock Cosmo pump and save my money for something better later. If you want to get something good to start with, look at the SX Model 18201 and the Aeromotive A1000. You will also want to get a corresponding fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter to go along with these pumps. FYI, an EFI fuel pump that is rated for "1000hp" is usually only good for about 700hp on a turbocharged engine, depending on your setup.

That sounds fine to me. It's going to be difficult making over 400hp with the cat and staying emissions-legal, though. My custom exhaust has a quick-change v-band cat and test pipe.

The ACT catalog lists all the torque ratings of their products. For your 500-600hp goal, plan on 450-500 lb-ft torque.

evil, always coming through with a plethera of knowledge!! thanks for all the info/links and thanks for helping out the "grasshopper"... im off to do some more research. PS i like the "test pipe" idea!! as far as the oil coolers are concerned, CWR makes a good kit which comes with perfectly sealing ducts for max. efficiancy... ive heard only good things.

would anyone car to talk about hte streetability of the high torque clutches? and how about hte multiple disc clutches? any expierience?

well im going to resurect this post from the dead instead of creating a new one....

ok well i have accumulated quite the amount of stuff for my project, but there is still more stuff to buy buy buy. ok well here's what im trying to decide on as of now, any imput would be appreciated

flywheel: 9.5 lb aluminum or 12lb steel? i cant decide...

cat back: i like the sound of the racing beat dual on 13b's ... but i dont know how it would do w/ the 20b? but quiter is better so im still debating that one

CAT: yeah yeah, 20b's shouldnt have cats.... well i cant stand the smell without one.... so its either gonna be a ceramic HF, or the knightsport metalit one (supposed to flow almost as well as a midpipe)... and if i up the HP to an outrageous level they are so small that it would be possible to put 2 of them either inline or in parallel (so they both are at hte same temp)

i have more parts considerations but these are basically the next things on the list

for a street car the 12.5er is great, 9.5 is not much worse but its a little more hardcore

i think the rb dual would prolly sound better with the 20b, but having never heard it who knows?

parallell would be better. i put a single 3" cat in mine and i couldnt really tell a difference, however i am only running like 6-7psi...

I believe the yellow fd that Howard is doing the bump steer for has the RB muffler w/midpipe. Also I think Rxman720b has one as well with a resonated midpipe. It would be very interesting to hear the differances between the two set-ups.

A resonated midpipe is a must! I drove my car with a regular midpipe for like 200 miles and had to switch it. I'm using the Apex GT exhaust which doesn't help. I couldn't hold a conversation in the car while driving it was too loud. Now with the RX7stores resinated midpipe it sounds awesome! Just a deep tone to it, and not too loud at all. I need to get a new video cam one of these days, I get enough requests for video/audio clips.

Now do you actually believe that you need enough reguest to post some audio/video clips of a 20b? Not posting them is more torchure than anything. Hook us up whenever you get a chance.

i dont know how you guys can stand the smell without a cat...... when i come inside my clothes reak of exhaust fumes... personally i need a cat even if it takes a few HP . but the one that im looking at is said to flow almost as well as a midpipe and clean the air better than a creamic cat. food for thought
