FD Conversion Questions

I am thinking about doing a 20B conversion to a FD. I was just curious if the AEM EMS could be used to control the 20B instead of the COSMO ECU. It seems that it should. I would assume that I should get the race version of the ECU, so that later I could convert it over.

Also, I looked at the APEXI site as to turbo timers and they had some info that stated that the FD and the 20B-REW used the same pinout and connector for the ECU. Just curious about these things.

Next, does the downpipe from an FD align with the turbo setup on a 20B-REW. Does anybody have any pics of the various sides of a 20B, including stock twin turbo pics.

One last thing, who can make motor mounts or what is the main difference between how they mount.

Thanks so much,

Gregory

conversion

don't waste your time trying to use the cosmo ECU unless it's an automatic cause it won't work for nothing, just get the aftermarket ECU.

you should prolby buy and aftermarket DP too, it's not that expensive, HKS is about 200.

you'll need to get a modified subframe, it'll make the swap a tad bit easier( this is a monster swap).

The AEM EMS is not yet on the market, so it is difficult to say what it will or will not do. The AEM engineers claim that it will run a 20B with split timing, but this will be impossible unless they can make one of the aux outputs into an ignition output. For now, I would say the the AEM will be able to run the 20B without split timing, just like the other EMS products on the market. I doubt that AEM is going to make a Plug & Play 20B FD version for the 2 or so people who would want it, so you would need to get the Race version. BTW, if you think that you can just bolt a 20B and EMS into your car in a weekend and drive off into the sunset, then you are going to have a very rude awakening.

You could use the stock Cosmo ECU if you have the electrical engineering background to fool it into thinking that it's in a Cosmo with the AT, variable exhaust, etc. The stock Cosmo 20B is only rated at 276hp, so I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble.

Do you have a link for this?

The Cosmo 13B and 20B mounts are located further back on the block. LOL, much like everything else on a 20B swap, YOU make the mounts. Pettit sells an FD 20B subframe for about $3,000.

Search this forum for 20B pics. You can also click on my www icon for pics of my project. I'm not sure what you are looking for.

if you look through the shop manuals you will find the connector that goes from the body directly to the ecu is the same, from 89 to 96; with about 3 pins different between generations. ie. the s5 fc and the fd are about 3 pinouts from being identical. i actually looked at the literature for the aem and it looks like you can use one of the other outputs for the 6th ignition channel. we have asked jason (of aem) how he fires a 20b, and lets just say its different from eveyone else.
the turbo downpipe flange is totally different between the fd and the cosmo, there is no off the shelf part for the 3 rotor/ fd
