Exclamation 949 Whp 20b?

Aight guys,

I just got this month's Turbo magazine and a guy in there has a new RX-8 with a 949WHP 20B motor in it...now my question is. What is the possibility of putting a 20B in my 87 RX-7? I did not know if it was a common swap, but common or not I am pretty sure I could do whatever it would take to fix. Let me know if you all know of (1) any one selling a converstion kit or the like, (2) a 20B motor (preferably turbo/twin turbo and a J-spec one would be nice), (3) any really good sites for some info on the swaps. Thanks alot.

Ross

Ross,
I don't flame because I too had to learn, but this statment here is going to get plenty of flames. The 20b came twin turbo'd from Mazda and was never sold in the US, so they are all "J-spec" if you meant this as one from Japan. Put on your flame suit.

Also try searching first.

Lightbulb Well well well

OK I have 3 JDM 20b's the cheapest one needs a complete overhaul and is $1000 minus shipping.

Now before everybody else starts beating on you , and like was said there are some serious ***** on this forum, next time due a search.

it costs about 15~20 thousand dollars for the average DIY 20b swap, thats right boys and girls, if yo do it yourself, have access to fabricateing tools etc it would cost you about 15~20 thou not counting the motor,

4~7K this includes a overhaul for the motor 4~7 grand depending on location
and shape of engine you buy
2 K FMIC
2 K computer and 1~3 dyno sessions (you will need many more to get it sorted
out)
2~4 K approx for engine cradle + spindels (pettit r any of a dozen companies
now days
2 K for fuel system
1 K for ignition and all wiring
4 K for various things Down pipe, clutch, custom mounts for this that and the
other

Now mind you there will be people who will say Oh I can do it for 8K well I'm telling its the same as the computer yu surf the web with garbage in, garbage out but go ahead and due some research I won't lie to ya its expensive

Oh and the other two engines range between 2.5K and 4K for and both run

The original poster did mentioned FC.
If we're talking FC, this is overkill.
FC3S.org sells engine adapters for $250.

With enough money, anything is possible.

It is NOT a common swap, and no offense, but I doubt that you could do it yourself if you are asking questions like this. I'm not trying to be mean, but realistic. You can probably perform a lot of the lower-level prep work if you have some basic mechanic skills.

The going price is about $35,000 USD for a 400-600hp conversion. See Pettit, PFS, or other top RX-7 shops for quotes.

Good, because that's pretty much all there is to choose from.

Smile Whoops! sorry!

Sorry Ted, my car came equiped with the engine so I didn't need an adapter! seriously I personally have never researched the pricing for dropping the 20b into anything other than what it came from a cosmo. so some of the prices might be a little high, but I think in the end that it will balance out somewhere in the neighborhood of the total when you figure in all of the mistakes he will make at first, better to have extra money left over than not enough to finish. (not that I have ever once had money left over on a car project!! ). theres never afreakin nuff of it!

so knock off a couple of thou cause evidently they can be had cheaper.
