Regardless how Mazda rated the 13b based 26b's displacement, when the e-shaft rotates twice, the 26b will MOVE 5.2 liters of air. That's the facts whether we rotor heads like it or not.

That's also the way that the IOC and IMSA understand it from what I have seen and is the reason that there is no longer a rotary in prototype racing.

I know its sord-of been beat into the ground, however, a four rotor has an ignition event happening every 90 degrees, a three rotor has one every 120 degrees ( i think) and a two rotor every 180 degrees. Regardless there is no real way to make a 3 sound like a 4 or a 2 sound like a 3. Thats not to say you can't make one sound great, it will just never sound the same, you just don't have enough ignition events to mess with. Think of a V-8 in a ferrari, very high pitched, then a vette Z06 they sound completely different, because one has a different order of ignition events. Domestic cars like the z06 have a split plane crank that has 2 cylinders firing at once, an exotic has a single plane crank with cylinders firing on their own. You can get a SBC 350 to scream like a ferrari v8, either with alot of money and machine work, or with a set of 180 degree headers that make the two innermost cylinders travel twice the distance giving the illusion of a single plane crank (to the ear at least). Can you do that on a rotary? No. There just aren't enough ignition events coming out of multiple exhaust ports to redirect them.

Anyone who has heard the original Le Mans 4-rotor and the more recent American Le Mans 3-rotor in person will most likely tell you they share almost the same shrill pitch...

^ Your right. Even the 3 rotor Furari sounds kinda like a 4 rotor.

Plus, the turbo on some 20b motors further mutes or muffles the sound. Plus, there is the number of firings per revolution is just higher, leading to a sewing machine gone wild sound to the 26b NA. So, you're just not going to get the sound of a 26b NA out of any 20b, I like the guy who said record a 26b and play it back on your stereo.

Yeah. So what would adding another spark plug to each housing do? Is that even possible?

Or how about a late leading/wasted spark ignition system? It can actually change the exhaust note due to the extra fuel igniting in the trailing edge of the rotor in the squish zone. When I tried it experimentally on my 20B it made it sound more like the PAC Performance RX-3 from the 2000 Nationals when it had a 20B, except mine could rev faster, being NA with a light flywheel vs their turbo and auto trans torque convertor.

As for the 23A we're doing, it too will get a late leading ignition so I'm curious to hear how it will sound compared to other 4 rotors in videos around the world.

There's no need for another spark plug.

Hate to dig out this thread
But here it goes again but in different way.
How to make a turbo 20B sound as close as possible to high pitched sound of ALMS NA 3 rotor? I'm serious and I need high pitched sound for my project.
I'd say that Furai doesn't sound like 4rotor, but it sure as hell sounds great!

Thank You
Ted

i thought i read somewhere that back in the late 80's before the 787b when mazda was still using 20b's they did have housings fitted with 3 spark plugs, i dont no if this has been said or if its even relevant, but it may have something to do with it.

i also vaugly remeber reading somewhere that whenever mazda makes a 20b they dont usually go turbo, which may be the reason it sounds so high pitched

but i very well may be wrong as i am going on memory alone

i also have a question or 2 about the 20b, but i dont want to thread jack, nore do i want to start a new thread only to be hammered because its been said already, so if someone would be so kind as to PM me, or let me PM them to ask it,

unless you guys dont care that i jack the thread
