20B D Series ready to drop in

Been waiting for a complete 20b for almost a year. Through dealing with horrible businesses to finally finding one that went above and beyond (REC) to get this completed. I finally have my large street port, studded D series delivered to my house. Now to get it into the FD lol

How's it going? What'd you decide on for a subframe solution?

funny you ask! Lol just got the break in tune done on it, had to do a couple things unrelated to the engine to drive it home. I pick her up on Thursday! I went with RECs subframe, it worked great. I did most everything myself with the help of very kind and generous people from this forum. Only things I didn’t do, were fab work for hot and cold side (not a welder by any means lol), and a few wiring things.

That’s great to hear, looks awesome.

Sounds like I may be in a similar boat - considering an N/A 20b swap but have zero welding experience.

Would love to hear what the elders had to say! That would probably make a great sticky.

thank you! It’s definitely been an adventure lol but it’s a borgwarner sx300 series 68mm. Goal is 650 to the wheels. Engine has a large street port on it, so nothing too extreme

Soon as I get some time here i plan on posting an exact cost and breakdown of the build for informative and educational reasons for anyone who wants to also do a 20b build. At the beginning of this journey, I asked for help in planning the build, and someone said “develop a budget for the build and then double it” that was prob the most true piece of advice I have received haha

If it's of any help, I have a singular data point to share.

A couple of years ago (2021) I was heavily involved in the build process of a friend's d series 20b car. IIRC it was about $38k in swap-related parts and was quite the learning experience. Not exactly sure what it would be now but as we learned you are best served by making a nice spreadsheet with everything and making sure you have all of the parts you need before dismantling anything.

It was turbocharged. Chris from Banzai did a large street port and rebuilt it and we bolted an EFR 9280 to the side. Tune hasn't been dialed in for power yet as we will need to replace one of the fuel pumps (it never worked) so they stopped at 400, though it is fast enough for me. I think it'll be able to hit the target number of 650 at the wheels (and reduce tires to nothing in short order) so it will be interesting to see how it does. I recall moving it around the driveway and it had noticeably more low end torque than my two-rotor so that was novel.

I don't even want to think about what an N/A dry sump peripheral port with all of the bells and whistles would cost. (think Katech 427 RHS monies) I'd imagine it'd be comparable to or greater than the figure I provided just for the engine and related services, but if I ever won the lottery I might consider moving the firewall back in my car and installing one.
