20B Beetle
Cool. Which starter will you use? A stock VW starter is slow on a rotary. The rotary needs a high speed starter, not necessarily a high torque starter, although the 20B has more drag from the extra seals, so high torque is a good idea.
The autostock self supporting starter is a good "start". But then it cranks slow as usual, so higher than stock voltage fixes this. 16 or 18 volts from a racing battery or heck the 24v mod from two regular batteries is a perfect solution. If going with two batteries, get two small ones like the Miata battery or some group size 51R or maybe a couple of those aftermarket carbon fiber dry cell jobs. Don't recall the name, but they're light.
I used a set of group size 38 which are low and wide (and heavy!). I already had one so figured I'd get another. Had I known about the Miata battery at the time...

Yep! And I meant to say autostick above.
Here is a pic of the 24v mod in my baja. Cranks insanely fast on a well seasoned 13B without sparkplugs in. Should crank a fresh 20B no problem.

Please don't ask me to type how to wire this up. If you understand basic series vs parallel wiring, you got this.

Thanks for the informations. Last year I used a 6 Volt VW Starter on my 13B Rear engine.
And yes this projekt is mid engine. The 20 B is to heavy in the rear and the realy fast beetles need some extra weight in the front.
The biggest problem is the weak vw transmission. The lightest solution i see at the moment is a mendeola trans.
We will see.
