Ok my 13b kicked the bucket, so now I want to go bigger and more power. I have always wanted to do a 20b swap but now I am leaning more towards doing a 2jz swap, I know about the 2jz and what it can do the numbers that is capable of putting down and how reliable it is .

And about the 20b........well I know so lil about them, I do know they can also put down amazing numbers but how reliable are they??? I know some of you guy's have done 20b swaps in your FD 7's, so maybe some of you guy's might be able to shine some light my way as to how reliable the 20b is and how you would compare it to a 2jz.

You came to the 20B site to ask if you should do a 2JZ or a 20B swap? I am sure you know what everyone here would rather do

I have been in cars with both swaps, weight wise it is possible to keep either swap similar but the 2jz is a very tall engine and when you drive the car (Assuming FD which is small) you can slightly feel the weight up top compared to the 20B swap if you go from one car to another and do a slalom type of motion. I guess it would be best to go with the engine you have the most experience with. You are coming from a 13B...I think you will like the 20B.

I am getting ready to do the 20b swap in my FD. Keep in touch as I am not too far from you. I would be happy to tell you of my troubles and victories. Where are you from in Houston. I am from Clear Lake area....League City. If you do a search go to advanced search and enter 20b then under that search titles only. That will give you a lot of info. Prices, troubles, and all the good.

 

Yeah I know 20b would be the choice of most people on here but I thought I'd ask you guy's on here and see what kind of feed back I get. So far so good

Not so much that I didn't maintain it right, I would change the oil every 2k miles if not less, spark plugs maybe every 3k miles or so. I got her rebilt when I first got her about 7 years ago, and out of those 7 years I probably drove her about 5 years.

 

Sound's good , I stay in Pasadena area right off the beltway and hwy 225, which is not to far from League City.

 

RATED RX7.... i pmed you. give me a call... i have a 94 supra 2jz making big power and i also have a 20b fd making big power.... i can talk to you about the differences between the 2 and anything ud want to know.

 

when you look at the power figures that each engine are capable of, they tend to max out at about the same amount of power... However, if you have a properly built 20b, with a good flowing port setup, you'll defiantly see a difference in spool time.. See, rotary engines tend to have a much stronger exhaust pulse than a piston engine, due to their inherit design. Something that you may or may not have known is that these high power 2jz engines you'll see around, they'll have huge numbers, but it'll be in a very narrow powerband.
As far as reliability.. it depends on whether its built properly and tuned properly.. if one of those two criteria are not taken care of, it wont be too reliable.. Theres also the option of water injection, which is really the key to reliability, and higher boost on pump, which of course means more power
theres also the sound.. personally i like the sound of a 20b more.
But who knows, who am i to judge on all of this kind of stuff. its really more of what you're looking at having.

Or a LS2, which is the cheap and easy way out and will kill everything on the road. I wouldn't do a V8 in a FD though... I'd keep it rotary.

 

20b all the way the 2jz is a great motor you will spend a lot of money if you want to make big power but it is one of the few engines that you can make a thousand plus hp and drive it every day for me if you are going to due a 2jz buy a supra

 

look.. the way i see it, if you HAVE to put a piston engine in your car, and you prefer a toyota straight 6, then look into the 1fz. its a 4.5 liter 2jz. you'll spool a 98mm turbo with ease

lol^^^ Ok let me ask you guy's this, Which is the cheapest way to go? How much will I be spending on a 20b swap? And how much will I be spanding on doing a 2jz swap? I think it be about the same if not the 20b will be a bit more expensive to do.

The way I see it, doing a 2jz is going to save me money in the long run (almost bullet proof so I've heard), I mean dont get me wrong I know the 20b is a very good motor as well but how long before I would have to rebuilt it? Will it be just like a 13b which has to be rebuilt every 60-70k miles? I would want to keep a rotary in her but if Im gonna save money and time in the long run Im thinking 2jz.

I have never experienced the 20b nor have I riden in a car that has one in it, thats why Iam here asking you guy's that have done these swaps and have experience with the 20b.

 

I have several people telling me that, but I would rather keep it a rotary before going with a v8. But then again who knows might change my mind .

if your rather keep the rotary over a v8 why are you thinking about dropping a 2jz? they are both piston engines..

Any swap is going to cost you $$$ their is a lot of things that you have to chance.. well almost everything.

 

Im a bit confused and indecisive as to what route Im gonna take , but I am really considering the 20b now.
