If you did what Cody's video shows.
7K when the engine is cold is not a good idea on ANY vehicle. It's a good idea to warm it up first, than you shouldnt have to worry too much.

rotarys can handle high rpms with ease if u properly take care of ur motor and its warmed up. infact i think they like the high rpms ;P

If you watch the car and driver video of the RX-8, even THEY say "and this engine loves to rev." and they mentio the need for a buzzer at high RPMS to let you know you're nearing redline because you'd never know it to hear it

Love these engines. Of course, everyone should know that to rev your car high, you *must* be taking good care of your engine, and have it warmed up first.

Good Care in my books definitely includes:
Frequent oil changes
Good (read: quality not octane) gas
not redlining it a million times daily
and basic other things like plugs, checking if you're running lean or rich, air and gas filter, etc...
