17x7 with a 38-42mm offset with 205/40/17's seem to fit well. some tires may be a bit close as some round out a bit.

Yeah I have them on mine same rims as Max7 (look great btw) with no real rubbing issues on 215's all around. Kumho Ecasta Supra tires.
I wish I had pics but you could check out Max7's page to see what they look like.
I got them for $420 shipped off of ebay used in excellent shape with good used tires.

17s will fit nicely, especially if you have the SE pattern swap, 17" Motegi MR7s, with 205/40/17 Yokohama Parada Spec II's:

Cool Yeah, They Fit

The 17's fit fine on my car which is lowered. I would recommend going no more than 215/40 in the front, the back has more space so you could go bigger and wider. If you really don't want to run into the problem of having the front tires rub - then go with 205/40 and roll the fenders as well. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/656571

I am about to buy some custom wheel adapters for my 82' GS.....they convert my 4X110mm patter to 4 X 4.5 pattern.....i should not have any rubbing problems or cleareance problem with this new patter on my gs...right? I am planning on buying 17's. I'm getting these adapters for 180 bucks.

yeah, 205s look nice on our cars. I had 205/55s on my 16" rims - enough tire to protect the rim and give a half decent ride while enough rim to get the looks

should fit great as long as the backspacing and offset of the wheel is right
