worth the effort?
Hey Guys,
I've got an '80 that is blessed (or is that cursed?) with a 4-speed tranny. I'd like to upgrade to a 5-speed (for the improved gas mileage if nothing else) and my question is this: Is it worth the effort (cutting stuff, replacing consoles, etc) to put in a later model tranny (ie 81+) or should I just save myself some trouble and try to find a 79/80? The clutch is on it's way out so I'd like to get this figured out and find a tranny soon, so I can do it all at once. Thanks!
Dave

I definitely want to avoid cutting if possible. But what power can the tranny safely handle?
Right now the 7's got a carbed 13b with exhaust (headers to dual hi-flow cats to 2.5" pipe). So it's definitely more power than the stock 12a, but is that too much for an older tranny? My guess is no, but I want to be sure before dropping the $$.
Thanks,
Dave
