Won't start...

So I still can't get my car to start... 86 n/a, with a weber 45 dcoe carb and a distributor from a 85. The car turns over fine and sounds likes it has compression (I don't have a tester) I fixed the flooding problem with the float in the carb. Now when I engage the starter it sounds like it wants to start... sounds kinda like a old lawn mower trying to start up...pop,pop,pop... but never catches and doesn't continue once the key is turned back. I have spark... but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I screwed up putting the distributor in... Can someone go over this procedure please? I'm completely new to the rotory and the part about "Turn the distributor housing until the projection of the signal rotor aligns with the core of the leading side pick-up coil" is a little hazy to me... maybe if someone could explain this for an idiot (me) I can do it right.

Thanks

If it sounds like it's trying to start try some starting fluid, Sometimes this will be enough to kick it over. Then you can more easily diagnose your problem.

Oh, And as for the distributor, There should be a tally mark on the bottom of the shaft that you line up with the mark on the distributor gear.
