ok guys here is a pickle of a problem. i have an 85 gsl with a 84 main harness. i just painstakingly replaced the whole wire harness due to a previous owner... anyways didnt have insturment lights before the swap and now that the harness is swapped i still dont have lights, pulled a bulb and it looked fine. pretty irritated at this because it sucks lol. anyhoo... is it possible that the board on the back of the insturment panel is defective ? going to look at it tomorrow in the light but any sugjestions would be helpful

start my making sure the dimmer switch is plugged in. if it is, unplug the connector and jump the two pins on the harness together with a pice of wire with a blade connector on each end. if the dash lights come on then your dimmer switch is bad. the dash harness between 84-85 model years is the same for the S and GS. the GSL added different connectors for the logicon and heater unit and the GSL-SE is close to the GSL but has the added bits for the EGI, ecu, main relays, and oil pressure/coolant temp sender wire integration into the main harness.

Make sure the two loose "bullet connector" wires under the shifter are NOT connected to each other as well.

what option do those go to anyway?
i pulled the dimmer switch and jumped it, that wasnt it. evidently one of the wires pushed out the back side of the plug when i put it together. took a bit but i figured it was a wire because i pushed on it to remove the screws the cluster in and they flickerd to life. let off and they went off. kinda crappy. its a good thing i went at this calm. i was pretty upset about it yesterday let me tell you...

I just spent 5 hours tracking down the reason why my dash lights don't work. Look here:
