wiring problem?

i droped the transmission about a month ago to change the clutch i finally got the clutch. and when i put it in i run into a problem. the starter was bad and the battery was toast. i got a new battery and starter and now i hook up the wires and test the starter. the starters not turning and the rpms go up to 4 and the rev buzzer goes off. then i test to lights for no reason but when i turn them on they flip up and the rev buzzer goes off and the rpms go up and then it dies and then randomly the light go up then down... so i think i need some help with this problem.

Good rule of thumb before any automotive work - disconnect the battery.

are all your connections on the starter properly? When I recently relocated the battery, I accidentally knocked the wire to the solenoid off its terminal (the connector was loose and corroded).
