Does your wiper motor get piping hot when you are running the wipers?

The FB's in my area always rust on the linkage from the motor to the arms, causing oddball wiper movement, and eventually just freeze up.

Pull the gearhead off and clean the copper tracks that are on the bull gear.

I can't be certain, but I based on lack of intermitent, and no parking; I think your controller is dead. High and low speed are completely isolated. Intermitent and parking is handled by the controller.

I am in need of one of these myself, with connector/harness, if anyone has one. Btw.

in the wiring diagrams, there is a "control processing unit" connected to the switch, the wiper motor, and the washer pump.

Based on a what I see on the wiring diagram. low and high speed are separate, if they work, the motor and switch has a good chance of being OK. Intermittent seems to be completely reliant on this "unit." Basic washer operation is switch and washer pump only, but the automatic wipe after is also controlled by the "unit."

Check that there is a wiper after the spray. if not, my guess is its your unit. lol

Agreed, 99.9% chance that this is it. It's basically a big round switch (for lack of a better term) that is on the motor, it maintains electricity to the motor as it's going through it's cycle and once it's gone 360* will make it turn off (unless the column switch is still turned on of course). If it gets dirty (after 30 years a good possibility) it will lose contact and the wipers will just stop wherever they are. Had this problem a few years ago, cleaned it and regreased and hasn't returned since.

As for the intermittent not working it's either going to be the relay/control unit that 82streetracer mentioned (it's up next to the steering column I believe on the same box that the flasher relay is - at least on 81-83's...) or a contact on the switch itself. I've had that issue before and it ended up being the switch. Again, after 30 years of switching on and off, the switch contacts being worn is the most logical place to start. At least in my opinion...

As far as I know, the control unit is just to control the intermittent turning on and off. It does not control anything else with the wipers since their positioning is all controlled by that rotating switch on the motor itself.

Good luck
-Sean

For those curious, here is a thread I started a few years ago when I had the same issue. DivinDriver posted a few good pics of that gear assembly.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty simple system if you don't care about the intermittent feature...
