Will not hold idle Engine dies under 1500 rpms

1984 1.1 39000 miles I started it up pulled the idle **** out and started warm up. For whatever reason I started down the road with the **** still out. It had run for 4 minutes or so. Drove about a mile and shut the engine off. It popped like a backfire in the carb and now it starts but dies at 1500 rpms and below. Runs above that but not very smoothly. Any help would be appreciated. What the heck did I do?

I had the same thing happen to my 84. My problem was a large vacuum leak. Maybe that's what's going on with yours...

The anti-afterburn hose can give you a big headache.
