Wierd electrical problem easy fix
On Sunday I blew a fuse that controls the blower motor, AC compressor, and radio. I replaced the fuse and still did'nt have any blower motor speeds, since #1 was already out I knew it was the series resistor, ordered from VB on Monday. Wednesday I take a day off work, go and do some joyriding, on my way home I went down some small country roads and decided to flip on my headlights since it was getting a little darker and to be seen better on the narrow roads.
My car just loses power and dies out going up the hill. I was thinking WTF, where did this come from, initially thinking fuel filter since I ran her pretty low that day. Well since the only thing I changed was turning the headlights on, I flipped them down, car fired up no problem, I went on home thinking it was a fluke deal no big deal.
Last night my blinkers had went haywire, they would all blink even the tag lights, its looked like first encounters of the third kind back there, weird weird stuff. I had no parking lights, my inside blinker indicators would light up when I hit the brakes, blinkers were useless. So I drive her home last night, car will not run with the headlights on. I would turn them off OK, flip them back on, car would start to cut out. I was leaving my friends house and its all country roads about eight miles to get home, so I just kept flipping them up and down over and over so I could make it home, luckily I did'nt pass any cars at all. Its was pretty stressful and I was worried about a stray dog or something running in the road and messing up the ride, anyway I made it home. I thought maybe the series resistor caused everything to go crazy but I knew that wasnt the case.
So after a night of stewing over what it could be I figured it had to be a ground of some sort, I went out and looked at my negative battery cable it was pretty corroded. I cleaned it up, no more poltergeist blinkers and it stayed running with the lights on. I guess it was trying to ground anywhere it could and it was freaking way out. So, something that simple can cause so much drama, I know it was long winded but wanted to post it so people will remember ro start with easy stuff first, if I had to start chasing an electrical problem it would drive me crazy!

Damn. That's pretty nuts. When I replaced my cables I totally missed the negative had a double ground. My volt meter would drop to 8, my temp needle would top out, my headlights were dim as hell, my radio would flicker and cut off when I hit the brakes, my brake lights would go completely out, dash lights were dim, the heat would be weak, alot of problems. I hooked a second ground up and presto, problem gone! I was happy yet mad cause I drove around like that for a few months and even made a cross country move. I was so freaked out the first time I drove at night cause I thought I was overheating the car LOL.

I had this happen to me once also. The terminal looked good at first inspection, then when I took it off to clean it a bit, the cable actually came OFF of the terminal that it was supposed to be soldered to (i bought an autozone cable) Lesson learned soldered batt cable suck ***.

I feel ya, something so simple had me so worried, I can handle nuts and bolts, but get confused pretty quick when it comes to electrical stuff. Pretty crazy driving on dark roads with no lights, I'll be keeping my posts clean from here on out!
