Question why do we need a fuel pump relay?

i've been having a whole summer's worth of tuning gremlins. to the best of my knowledge, i've traced the majority down to a goofy running fuel pump relay. i've got it hard wired now, and yup, killed off a lot of those lil buggers.... man, gremlins tick me off . but i started thinking, that relay had to have some purpose, right? of course, it wouldn't be the first time i've found a useless item to disconnect..... anyway, i'm not worried about burning up the pump, not just yet anyway. its the $20 autozone special. no big deal. but i dont want to get my holley red on there just to be fried.

a relay is a safety switch and eliminates the direct connection of the load (ie, pump) to the power source. i will not worry much, as far as frying the new pump, as long as you have the correct amp/fuse. ck the recommended amperage on the instruction that came with it.

fuse? actually, its wired into the back of the fuse box, same fuse the original fuel pump was hooked to . i just ran a bypass wire cutting the relay out of the circuit. no blown fuses yet, but i was curious if my ham-fisted mechanic-ness had botched another job. anyone else ever fix something and end up breaking 2 other things in the process?

im referring to direct connection to the battery or other than the fuse box.

In addition, adding a switch to the pump is another security measure that the thief will not be able to get far.

thanks for the info wacky! i'm not too concerned about thieves. i've got this sweet set on new recaro's on order. state of the art seats. they've got the onboard gluteal certification system option(patent pending). an intelligent sensor in the seat reads the particular shape of the bottom sitting in it. if that posterior doesn't match the owner's gluteal profile, it kick's your butt outta the car :p
