Unhappy whole heap of stuff

ok i need a few opinions on what to do
i just bought myself an 84' rx-7 GS red
and its got major backfiring problems after driving it
in detail its really cold out we started it up drove it to the garage hoisted it up and look at it it didnt look to bad
it aparently has a fairly new engine in it and after we looked at it we test drove it, its like a dream come true... tho its got no guts at all theres a hole in the exust somewhere (btw i cant spell worth ****) and it backfires hardcore after driving it around...
then me and another friend hoped in it and drove it around just fine it seem to have gotten a very small amount of power back
and it didnt back fire nearly as bad infact i cant rembering it backfire more then once i still wanna know what i should look for and what to replace.

aslo, it idles really low probibly 500 or under rpm and i donno what to do about that ? just mess with the idle adjustment?

on top of all this i wanna soup it up make it a little more powerfull i need new bushings all round and some advice on what i should do with it i want it to be an eye catcher and fast as well as hug the road ( like it already does even with shot bushings) so let me know what u guys think i should do thanks
btw ill have pics up within a week of what im concernad about most with the car thanks again

I'd make it fast b4 I made it look fast.

The backfiring is the air control valve. If there are no emissions in your area then you can remove it and get a block off plate from Mazdatrix. If you have emissions, then move to a place that doesn't.... J/K.
Go through the car and replace what is in need of repair. Get poly bushings if the stock ones are shot. I don't like replacing something just to upgrade.... but I'm a poor college student. When something does go out, though, I usually get a performance replacement. If the exhaust fails, then get a good header system, if you don't emissions testing in your area. The exhaust is very important on RX-7's. You cannot get a cheap turbo muffler from PepBoys. Get the exhaust at RacingBeat or Mazdatrix.
We are all here to help. Have fun and enjoy the RX!!!

EEEK!

Hmmmm, first thing s first, remove the cats and place in a straight pipe. Go for a drive then decide what to do next. Removing the emissions equipment is the correct next step though.
