WHO WANTS 1ST GEN rAcK @ pInIoN STEERING?
I'm so in if the first reviews come out good... I've been reading the progress of this and I'm very impressed, I've always been talking about a rack and pinion setup here at home but never actully investigated making one work, great work J Oliver

Ya I know it looks like a very severe angle and that could have been addressed in to ways. I chose the less off the 2 evils because the 2nd involved lengthening the u-joint shaft by 2inches which would have meant more work 4u. the way I chose involves a removal process. The u-joint itself was clearenced by removing 1mm from the binding spots on the 4 sides with any bench grinder, it takes only 5 seconds on each spot (yes I timed it!).
This is a very common practice when building the Outlaw Midgit dirt cars and or any car with tight clearences. I had it on the car last night and I gota tell ya it felt like steering my old nimble VW Rabbit again, absolutely amayZING. It almost feels weird hopping in the car like I have 1000's of times using the steering wheel to adjust my positioning and its not flopping all over the GD place. Then you just sit there like me ,no motor and all, and pretend how your gonna go through the twistys WITHOUT white-knuckle symdrome. I so cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CP-Racing got back 2me and we will be installing it on his RUNNING car very soon and he will be giving feedback, like I said before he told me he travels over 1000kms per week with his 1st gen so it should not take long to get all kinds of (++++) feedback. wish us luck ( we dont need no stinkin luck)

Can you see if you can get him to test it going sideways too?
I feel a little concerned about how the tierods will hold up in hard cornering. The angle of the steering arm (is that what its called?) seems pretty severe. Like phooka metioned, it looks like it could bind, or bend. Then again, i dont really know what im looking at. Everything else looks good to me though.

Can you guys please please please stop worrying about the "Severe" universal angle and read what I have already posted. IT DOES NOT BIIIIIIIINNNND!!!
Sorry for yelling but holy crap, get over it, it wont bind. Do you really think that I would put this whole system together and say to myself
"Oh it binds, oh well they will get over it"
C'mon, think about it. Once again im sorry but everytime the severe angle issue is brought up I feel like you are insulting my intellegence and it also proves to me that the thread is not being read in its entirety. Then I wonder why I even check in all the time.
Oh what the hell, I cant lie to you guys, I love this stuff. As a wise man once said "Holy Crap"

actually i have read the whole thread, but its getting a little confusing. First one things one way, and then its another. I mean, damn there's 12 pages here. and half of it is people just posting. "hey, looks cool, ill buy one"
Sorry, just trying to get clear on one thing.

Shiiiiitttt... That's nowhere near severe... Now that I've seen the two inches removed... I know there's cars that have angles worse than that stock... Never seen the steering on one, but I think the old Toyota Minivans have it going on...
Now, what's the little piece go to?
This guy...
Where'e he go? I didn't see him in the first pic of it all assembled...
Does it go at the bottom of the column, before the first U-joint?
Lemmie ask you this, and I think this is the first time this has been asked... After the mod is complete, is the safety collapsable part of the steering column retained?
If that bracket doesn't bend, (And I think you'd really have to try to **** your car up to bend it, as you'd either be ina bad side collision, or tear out your oil pan.) then I think you've got a solid product there... That cardboard mockup didn't do it any justice.

i'm with maguire, its confusing. the design has been changed since page one, so I say a new thread should be made clearly explaining what all the stuff we're looking at is and how it all works. I'm pretty confused at this point about a few things
J Oliver, can you or one of your customers drive a 1st gen with the r&p installed in it down to southern california for SevenStock and show us all in person? Let us take it for test drives and bring an unassembled kit with you for us to go over. Target audience all in one spot, could be a BIG seller!
Thanks and keep up the great work!

god guys the picture up above is the custom bracket he made so you do not have to cut up your steering box, you have the bearing rather that your idler arm bushings.
