Under the Rear Bins. Remove them, check under the carpet.

middle of the line 1985 technology. Does that answer your question? Mine was under the drivers seat.

They're 50 watt (25x2) Clarion Amps. Many have said they're not half bad. I wouldn't know. Mine were disconnected when I got the car.

Mine are pretty good for 18 year old 25W amps.

OK. According to my research , Mazda installed a set of two amplifiers from Clarion. They are both two-channel amps, somewhat similar in size to a mouse pad. One amplifier, located underneath the driver's side storage compartment, is used to power the rear speakers. The other amplifier powers the front two speakers, but it's location may vary. I've got an '85 GS, and I found it underneath the dash. Other years, such as the '83, have the amp placed under the driver's seat. I've also seen a three piece amp setup from Mazda in the early years of the RX-7, which is located in the same place as the '83, but with an additional counter-part underneath the driver's seat. I'm currently removing my stock 3-piece Clarion stereo, speakers and amps and installing a new Kenwood system. While the stock stereo looks nice, the sound quality, (especially bass), is terrible (in mine at least). Well, I hope this helps. Good luck!

the 25watts is peak, at higher distortion, but anyway....
they are on the front side of the rear bins, pull the storage bin out and take a look. it's one per side.
if you didn't blow a fuse and toasted the amp chip you can look for that chip from alliedelectronics.com or digikey.com I think it's like $6 per piece.. just some soldering and heatsink grease will do the job.
My GSL-SE had 3/4 channels blown when I got it, I just got new amps from a junkyard car, but mine had too little grease on em. and the prior owner obviously did some bad things with the stereo too.
IF you need em i've got my old ones... I can repair the chip & test em in my car if you need to buy a pair.
djs2571@yahoo.com if you are interested.

are there fuses on the actual amps.....?

the first time i had the car, my friend hooked the battery up backwards....

blew a fusible link in the engine bay...and then, now, stereo turns on, but no sound....

There's a 7.5A slow blow fuse in the harness leading to the amp. Pull out the storage bin and you will see the fuse case on a (blue? ) wire. I don't know off hand, but I don't think much is protected against reverse batt, so it may have fried quite a bit of stuff.
