Hey, Has anyone converter from the Lug Bolts to Wheel Studs? Anyone know the thread pattern for the GSL? Thanks Rotary-Rex

I know that Mazda Motorsports has them, but you have to sign up for their support program and have current race results to buy from them. If these apply to you, then sign up with them and reap the savings on stock parts for your 1st gen.

depends on the year... My 1980 and 1982 have bolts (the 1982 is now converted to stud/bolts at the front), my 1984 had studs/bolts. So does my Fc, but that's already a different gen.

just take the old lug bolts to your local auto parts store and they can tell you which wheel studs to buy.

yeah MK3 volkswagens came with bolts too its a pain in the *** cuz when you got the car jacked up changin wheels and your trying to lift the wheel with both arms theres no studs to put the wheel on.... you almost need a second person to put the bolts thru while u hold the wheel... studs and nuts are so much more convienient IMO.

just realized that i didnt actually answer the original question lol....

you should be able to take the bolt to any Auto Zone or whatever and theyll be able to match the pitch or whatever then when you get the studs you gotta put a little Lok-Tite on the ends of the studs and allan wrech them in good and thats all there is to it.

Ok heres the correct answer,if you wanted to put studs in your G/GS/GSL models..

We even did this to my boys RX2,
I have a hook up,I get studs that have an allen head inside the middled of them,What you do is put some lock tight on the stud thread,Screw it in with a allen key as far back as it needs to be,

As a matter of fact I have probally a set of 8 of them here I was using to test something out..

BUT If you wanted some I can get you them about $1.00-1.50 each
I can get these in 2 diffrent lengths I cant remeber the size though...

If you want pics I can scan them ..Email me for info plz..

I also cant remeber the threading its on there..What ever the stock threading is..

BUT I have 2 full sets/for 2 cars of Gorilla locks brand tuner locks with key/new never been used I bought for cars in the past.

they are metric
12x1.5

Which fit alot of imports,They come with the key
The chrome set has 20 tuner lock nuts/
The blue set has 16/

I will sell them $10. and you pay shipping which couldnt be no more than 10. which is over quoting..just depends on where you are at.

OK, We got lots of positive replies, i am happy to see that. Now, when it comes yp putting in the stud, do you need to cut off the end of it that is usually pressed into the hub? I think this can be done very easily. Anyone have a pic of this already done? Also, anyone seen the Anodized Mcgaurd Locking Lug Nuts avialable on ebay.com? THey are a total dress up item and in my opinion would bring alot of attention to your wheels. Give me some input. Thanks boys Rotary-Rex

I guess you didnt understand me ..the studs Im referring to are NOT pressed in studs...

You CANNOT run pressed in studs on G/GS/GSL
RX7s cause there are no splines for the stud to lock in on ..Its THREADED..whcih is WHY I said to use the set up for what I posted..

In the US the 79-85 12A cars had bolts, while the 84-85 13B ones had studs.

That's one of the stupid things in the otherwise good movie "Changing Lanes" (Ben Affleck, Sam Jackson)

German cars (like some Japanese ones) use wheel bolts, not studs. Sam Jackson takes the bolts out of Ben Affleck's Mercedes left front wheel - we know this, because we see a shot of him holding those gleaming (!) bolts in one hand and a tire iron in the other as he sits in the back of a cab driving alongside Ben.

Yet the wheel magically stays on as Ben started the car in motion and made about 20 turns before accellerating onto the freeway. It's not until he SEES the tire iron in Sam's hand that the wheel flies off.

But with the bolt system, the wheel won't stay on the car when it's PARKED, let alone moving, if the bolts are out

OK, So they do make a stud that just screws in, what i was wondering was if all studs were pressed studs. Now i got it. Going to go ahead and try this out tomorrow!! Thanks for all the help! I work at goodyear and every mechanic was like "its not possible";. Its a shame that they know nothing!! And they are always ripping on RX-7's. And look, you guys are all msater than them!!! Most studs are presed in ..But Like I said ..I have used these studs and we just put some on my friends RX2..

Theres alot of dumb mechanics out there that will question something cause they have not heard of it.You willnot be able to "try" this unless you get these screw in studs.. Autoparts stores dont sell them..

Heres a pic of the studs I got ,You will noticed the small end..thats the end you screw into the hub..make sure its clean.and make sure you put thrad lock on it..

Show them this pic..
Tell them a dumb ASE certified 71/2 auto tech showed
this to you.I want to knwo what response they give you.

I hope this pic is clear..I scanned it

Ok here it is real and simple..been there done that..

You want diffrent lug pattern ..
Get a GSLSE suspension,You hit 4 birds with 1 stone.

1=Lug pattern easy to find rims for.
2=Bigger brakes in the front
3=LSD WITH 4.07 gearing
4=Disc brakes in the rear
...........
Do you think you can sit out there and drill 16 holes perfect with your Black and Decker cordless drill?

How are you going to set the studs in?Remeber the most studs have splines on them..and so does the hub they are going into..Yes you can tack weld them ..BUT have you ever taken offa lug nutwitha stud spining freely in your rim?

I have and 99.% that rim willbe cosmetically damaged..
..................
1=There are rim shops out there who sell undrilled rims, that a custom rim shop can drill andsleave the holes for you like this shop.
www.aktires.com

2=Also if you have a 4 lug rim with a centercap ..they can most likley drill it and resleave that for you.

3= you can get billet adaptors made

Any more suggestion?

Those studs look exactly like Mazda studs. I say share the hookup with the forum. You can still sell them for the people who don't want to go through the trouble of tracking them down.

btw, I paid $2.55 per stud from Mazdaspeed. So a $1 to a $1.50 sounds like a good deal to me.

They guy who built my Mariah actually did this, but the other way around. He modified the FD rotor/hubs in front to accept stock 1979-1983 wheels, so the PLS Le Mans rims would fit. But I would have liked it more if I could have had the FD patterns in front and at the rear...

I dont want to be stuck with $100. worth of studs/lugnuts,BUT I also dont want to run down there 5 times a week. Its a 20 min drive to go get them.BUT I dont mind doing it maybe 1 or 2 times a week..It helps keep my connection open and they know I will come back. This is a wheel/and tire distibitor warehouse.

I cant belive you paid that much .thats insane..

You both provided the same info about thredding studs in, but Sorrow provided an actual sorce for the studs and their dimensions. Back when I tried to source some studs I went through every wheel stud bin in my local Autozone - they don't carry anything like it.
