Wheel Painting

Has anyone painted the stock 1st gen wheels? I was thinking about spraying them black for a little different look and to cover up some curb rash on the beater. How well does the aluminum paint? Any sticking issues?

Hands down, go with a Duplicolor Wheel Paint. Go to your local Advance Auto Parts or Murray's or AutoZone (in order of my preference) and pick up a few cans for $4-5 each.

Do a forum search on how to do it so it lasts.

Done.

I did my 13" stocker's in Dupli-color's "graphite". Looked good, the paint stuck well when I had them. I taped the lip of the rim and just painted the "+" part.

If the curb rash is minor, it can be sanded out. Do this outside, wear a respirator. Aluminum dust does not come back out of the lungs easily.

I have sanded and feathered a few rims that have had curb rash and you can't even see it, this includes my prized Epsilons with the polished lips.

I did a friend of mine's rims once. We sandblasted the rims to get the old chrom off, gave it a few coats of the duplicolor paint you guys are talking about, and then a coat of the clear that's made for wheels, and they looked great. Still do actually, and this was a couple of years back

this thread is useless without pics! was thinking of doing the same to mine but wanted to see some pics to get an idea of how it would turn out. ihave the old + style rims and wanted to do something different with them, the clear coat is coming off in some areas.

I have the old + rims too, on my 82. Clear coat came off many years and they got pitted and oxydized, and just plain fugly. I took them a few weeks back to a wheel repair service and just had them bead blasted. That made them look a lot nicer, and have a very fine sandy texture to them. After reading this thread I will probably try the Dupli-color, at least to protect them for awhile. I really wanted to get new wheels, I have a set of BS Potenza tires that have virtually no miles on them, and I don't think there are any new 13" rims made that would fit the 4X110 spacing.

no kidding, the only thing i could figure out is that we can use mustang rims instead. Which would be fine but ****...still kinda hard to find them. 4x108 pattern with the proper lugs. Um...cant i just get my hubs machined to have the same holes but in a 4x100 pattern. Just use the spaces between the holes. I got an apraisal of 200 bucks to get them machined.

Nice msd ignition in the back ground...i wish i had that lol. Sorry to hijack but where the hell can you get a set of stuby coils for our cars to help with spark without a standalone msd unit.

Do go to the extra trouble and put the appropriate clearcoat for wheels on them. It makes the finish that much more durable.

In fact, I've found painting something in flat back (which is super easy from a rattle can), and covered with the clearcoat looks great. I re-did my wiper arms on all 3 of my vehicles and they look like new gloss back finish.
