What's wrong with my RX-7?

Okay I got a couple of problems

This one I had for a while but now I will have it checked tomorrow. Sometimes, when I'm at high RPM(over 5000) my car makes this really weird noise. I asked my dad about it and he wasn't sure what the heck it was so I sent it to a mechanic. He thinks that it's a bolt somewhere that may be loose and makes noise when the engine moves more(high RPM). He may be right and I'll tell if it's fixed tomorrow

Since two days, sometimes my RPM needle goes crazy! It jumps from 1000 to 4000RPM, drops back to 2500, goes up again but I'm still on idle.. When it does that, the car will choke if I don't give gas. I asked the mechanic and he said that my tach is the problem. He said that my RPM are measured in the distributor(I didn't know that) so he said there might be a "misfire" somewhere that would cause that

I also got a rough idle and I'm running very rich(I know these are common though)

You guys got any ideas?

The RPMs are measured off of one of the coils, not the distributer. I can't remember if it is the leading or trailing coil though.

The RPM jumping problem is probably the result of a faulty trailing ignitor. Do a search on trailing ignitor and you should find lots of discussions about it.

what kind of noise, be more specific. buzzing? rattling? screeching?

tach probs: almost garuntee it's the ignitor.

idle problem: either a vaccum leak (check all your hoses) or maybe the problem from you running too rich. how do you know your running really rich?

Does the noise go away if you take it out of gear? if you push the clutch in? does it get louder the higher the rpm etc.. ?

get your car fully serviced and tuned. new aircleaner, sparkplugs, oil, oil filter, timing checked and set.

does the noise come from under the car? i had a nut missing on my gearbox crossmember, so it was getting held in with only 1 nut, and it would rattle abit. also check your exhaust that its not hitting/tapping your chassis.

okay the sound is fixed(I changed my distributor and my point gaps were finished)

the mechanic also did something that I liked On that huge blue air filter box, I didn't know that there was a "device" that would block the air from entering. Instead, it would pass by that little hole where the hot air comes in(for a cold start). The thing is, my system wouldn't work so the air would only come in by that small hole. Now I took out all that **** so I can get all the air I need

So now I can feel a nice difference in power... I guess I had no spark at high RPM and a huge restriction for air...

now I can have some more fun
