Question Whats up with this NEED FOR SPEED thing?

Called my friend to come over and let me show off my 81. Just put a New Nikki carb on and got it tuned and runnin real good. Took him for a ride and snapped his neck a little. He says "WOW, ITS FAST" I proceed to tell him I want to remove rats nest, better ignition, header with great exhaust system, turbo and the works. Thats when he said, you got the NEED FOR SPEED. I wonder, if I do all that, will it satisfy the NEED FOR SPEED?

You have to think to yourself, "why do I want more power?" If your answer is simply "because my car isn't fast enough" then you must decide, what is fast enough?

To a degree there will come apoint when your want for more speed is met, and you'll be set, but chances are - that won't be for a long time, and the finances required to get that speed are far more than available for a car.

Then there comes the point that, after all that is done, you're increase of power will scare you at first (If you go from NA to turbo just like that), and you're Need for Speed will have been met until you get used to that power. Once used to that power, and have the car built to maintain that power and balance that power, you will probably want more.

This is all theory, though. You and I are far different people, I'm sure, and I would be more than satisfied with a 14 second car just so long as I could handle.

I think it is more of the Fort Wayne cops that are such ********. Here in Muncie, I got off with more warnings than anything else. Then again, they did give me a ticket for running a yellow light.

depends who you are, i have no need for speed, i like going slow, only time i go fast really is in the corner, decide what you wanna do with your car and then work from there, you dont wanna have a 9 second car trying to autocross, doesnt work out all that well

Exactly.

I met my speed requirments with my setup.Sure,I could make it faster....and it'd be pretty cleap and easy too, since Ive already done all the hard work. But more power and more acceleration would just produce more headaches for anyone other than a dedicated drag racer....or someone who is determined to have the fastest car on the road(a fruitless goal, theres always someone faster/richer)

Being able to accelerate and turn quickly within my car's traction abilities has me satisfied. It can go fast in a straight line,turn-in quickly, and is manageable coming out of a turn.Sure, itll bite if you dont respect it,but I dont let anyone else drive her,and Ive got a good handle on the cars personality.
Thing I hate the most is when idiots ask me,"How fast is it?"........I always roll my eyes and say something like....."I dunno, whats the speed limit,65?"

ha ya i know how ya feel, my main car is a 95 geo prizm that i autocross, it is fast in corners due to good set up, but everyone wants to race straight line when they ask me how fast it is, i say well think of the slowlest you could go and im slowly ha, i dont need to prove anything to anyone, people who know im fast come to the autocross, those who dont, well their wall isnt filled with trophies

i hate that question, how fast is it.. wtf does that even mean? just about any car theses days can go 120 or 130 depending on the governor. but how fast will it get there.

fast enough is a relative term...lol. when i bought my car stock it was fast enough, but then it wasn't, then I pulled the rats nest and rebuilt the carb and went to mech secondaries, but then again it wasn't...then went with the streetport, and racing carb, and lightweight flywheel, and full rb sp exhaust, and electric fan, and 13 bre trans, and gsl se suspension, and its been fast enough for a while, but now i want more...again. it will never stop, until you get the point that its fast enough to scare you shitless, or kill porche turbos

It depends on what your need for speed is.

Look around there are a few threads on how much hp each mod gives you, or what other performance gains you can expect.

need for speed....hmmmm..... well, a stock fd was fast enough at first, now I'm doing exhaust, intake, ecu and nitrous. hopefully that gives me my fix for a while.

The thing is, you want the thrill. And to get the thrill, you have to get a little bit scared. So once you start getting comfortable or confident with any given level of horsepower, you're not going to be satisfied anymore.

Comfortable + Confident = No Fear
No Fear = No Thrill
No Thrill = Not enough horsepower to satisfy your Need4Speed

Simple math really.... Um, you guys did take math, right?

you guys just need to take corners, then horsepower takes a very small part, and its alot better than going fast i think

I agree^

I've been in faster cars than my bone stock FB, however taking corners in a car that doesn't turn to slop is more thrilling than zooming down a highway at 100+.

i guess its just what you like i mean the only way i would wanan go really fast if it was like 300mph plus in a drag car, other wise its all about corning, going fast in a straight line you have g forces pulling you back, taking corners you ahve g forces throwing you every which ya, i like being a ragdoll, just depends what you like

I am the same person who only got into rx7's because of the engine, and only was interested in the engine because of the engineering behind it. I wasn't a performance guy by any means whatsoever, and I'm still not. I like to have fun in my car, sure, but no where even close to why I bought either one of them.

A lot has changed since then. Looking for a bit more power with a lot more suspension.

I'm sorry to hear that, Cowboyfun, I blew mine a little over a week ago. I've been on house lock since, as it was my only car.
