What a weekend... but good came out of it...(NEW CAR)

Yes, I know, the weekend was a while ago, but it took me that long to recover from it...

So this past weekend I went to pick up my first 1st gen Rx-7 (2nd Rx-7, other is a rusty 2nd gen ). The original plan was to tow it on a car dolly with a tow-minivan, however the tranny on the minivan went south, taking that plan with it... so I reserved myself a nice, small, 14' Uhaul truck, and car trailer. (This was 2 weeks in advance of this past weekend) So I figured I'd be good for the move.
....boy was I wrong...

(NEVER TRUST UHAUL!)

They were supposed to call on friday night, before 5pm, to confirm my reservation... and let me know where to pick up the truck and trailer (somewhere in ottawa). They didn't call...

..So I called...

...and called...

...and called...

...and eventually they answered... and told me that my reservation that I had made 2 weeks before this was worth nothing. (Notice, on the back of the Uhaul truck, it says something about 'easy, online reservations'?)

So anyway, we decided F* them, we're going to show up saturday morning anyway, get us a truck... So we showed up at 7am, and there was already a line of people waiting (place opened at 7am). When my turn to speak to someone finally comes around, it turns out that they have no truck for me (lot looks full, of course... ), But they can get me a truck in Bancroft (Small town, about 3 hours/250km away from Ottawa). So I have the manager promise me the truck will be there, and he shakes on it... (of course, to complicate matters, the trailer is back in ottawa, so I have to come back for that...)
...and of course the truck wasn't there....

...but atleast the people in Bancroft are helpful, someone backed out at the last minute and I got a truck... wasn't a nice little 14' truck though, it was a 26' truck (biggest thing I've driven prior to this is a Dodge Caravan... or a tractor... )

..and then, the guy who I was supposed to be picking the car up from, let me know that he wasn't even there the day I was scheduled to come (which turned out to be okay, 'cause it was late when I got the truck and trailer back to ottawa)

Anyway, I picked up the car, and the parts ($600 CAD), and headed slowly home (4.5h drive). Got it home just fine, no problems whatsoever. (Didn't even have problems driving through downtown ottawa with a car trailer!)

The Car is an 82 GSL, non-running (yet ), with no major rust (minor bin rust, no underbody rust). In addition to the car, I got the following parts:
-85 Rear axle/LSD
-85 Driveshaft (not compatible, I know... but I took it anyway )
-Good condition transmission
-2 brand new strut inserts
-2 used struts (85)
-2 Maroon seats (the ones in the 82 are pretty beat up)
-2 Door panels
-Door window glass (2)
-2 Spare Carbs!
-Spare starter
-Spare Alternator
-Good condition (uncracked) taillights
-New brake pads all around
-uhmm... a lot of electrical bits in boxes I haven't opened yet...

Oh, and best of all, it came with a complete spare vacuum spider!! Just what I always wanted! (the one thats on the car will join the spare one in a few short weeks )

Woo... Hows that for a novel...?

Matt

...and to bring a wonderful weekend to a close, after all my perfect driving of the 26' truck and the wide *** car trailer, I decided to go for gas....

...seems innocent enough right?

...wrong...

...Pulling in to get gas, I noticed it was a bit tight, so I stopped and my dad (who I had picked up when I had dropped my new car off) helped me back the truck up so I could clear a crown vic that was parked a little out of the parking space...

And then, pulling forward, after I was given the all clear, I smoked it with the trailer....

..So I'm still waiting to catch the insurance related sh* from this, but on the bright side, the guy backed the truck up for us, and pulled it forward so I could get gas!

Moral of the story: If you are driving a rented Uhaul truck with a trailer and don't know how to back it up, and accidentally bump another car... be sure to run into a truck driver!

Well congratulations

There are still more hardships ahead, but all are well rewarding

(My RX-7 still doesn't run, but I love it)

My wife and I have found that something bad almost always happens when you got to get a 7.

Sorry that the U-haul place was like that, I have had good luck the two times I have used them, Bought a tow dolly and a truck so I would not have to again.

Welcome to the 1st gen section, The best of all 3.

Hey, those red rims would go with my newly painted red oil pan!

Anyways, when backing a trailer, put your hand at the 6 o'clock position. To have the trailer turn right, move your hand to the right and to have the trailer turn left, mover your hand to the left.

Thank you, and I'll have to try that next time I'm home...

They look much more purple in person ...but that will change... oh, forgot about that, new set of stock rims (unpainted) also came with the car...

...and the sad thing was, the problem wasn't backing up, it was the pulling forward ...but I'll try that next time I have to move a trailer... (*crosses fingers and hopes it's gonna be a long time from now* )

Oh what we go through for our sevens, but the end reward is the greatest. Sorry to hear about the U-haul experience. But now you already have your first story when you get the seven all done and am showing her off.
