What size fuel pump to use in a carbed fc?
What size fuel pump to use in a carbed fc?
My fuel pump blew last weekend. (probably because the previous owner was trying to run the stock fuel pump with a 2 double barrel carb setup he put in in place of the fi system) I would hear the pump ticking then all of the sudden it stopped--well almost stopped, now i can hear a very very faint ticking when i put my head in the back above the pump. I am wondering what size fuel pump i should get for the carberetor system i have. Its a cartech 2c turbo (w/o turbo, but will have soon hopefully) It is 2 2bbls. i am told that most carbs run at like 4-6psi and fi runs at what like 20-40? I dont know for sure. I was just wondering what you guys would recomend i buy to replace the blown pump. Thanks!
I thought id post it here and in the 2nd gen forum cuz you guys are the ones with carbs.

With 2 carbs, I'd go with a Mallory Comp110 and a line splitter to keep both feeds as equal as possible going to the carb inlets. It'll be quieter than the ticking nonsense of a factory or a Facet fuel pump.
I have a similar problem.. I've got a fuel cell on the way for my '80 SCCA ITA car, and the fuel pump runs @ like 80 psi the guy says. That's obviously too high, can I regulate it down to a lower pressure somehow (reliably) and still have enough fuel flow @ higher RPM's?
Theres no way a stock fuel pump on a 12a will do what you are asking of it. My stock 12a Mikuni setup needed more fuel to keep it fed. I got a holley 95GPH and put a fuel pressure regulator set a 4-1/2PSI. OH, I also upgraded to 1/2 fuel line, and a reusable highflow fuel filter, and GSL-SE sender unit because it had larger lines coming out of the tank. This was overboard, but then it will never run out of gas except when the tank is empty. Plus later on I went to a mildport and now a bridgeport so it gets some good usage of the extra flow ability.

So what fuel pump and regulator do you think i should get? I want to know the cheapest one that would do the job. How will i get one that would fit into the stock spot? I dont know hardly anything about fuel pumps and I need to know what one i should get. Thanks
Ya know, I really haven't messed with my FC enough to know were the stock pump is! But I put mine in a different location on mine. because the stock location was a bit small for it. The Carter 75GPH pump $70 is the cheapest one I think would reasonibly keep up with that engine.
The stock 12a pump is less then 35GPH and just barely keeps the stock Nikki with fuel.
Don't go get one of those cheapo regulators because they don't flow much through there small fittings, but they can regulate the fuel ok. So get a holley or carter regulator, I think it will be in the range of 30-50bucks?

hey im sorry guys i really just dont know what im talking about. Is it possible to find a fuel pump that will fit into the stock location, or am I going to have to buy an inline pump and then some how run the fuel line into the tank and cover up the hole where the stock pump used to be? If i could find a pump that would fit into the stock location that would be great. Does anyone know where or if i could find one? Also, my engine cuts out at full throttle. Could this be from lack of fuel because the stock pump didnt pump enough? Thanks
The Facet fuel pump sold by Mazdatrix comes with everything necessary to fit it into the stock fuel pump location. You only have to bend one ear of the "splash" shield. Everything else utilizes holes already drilled into that shield. I don't know the price anymore, I got mine last year as a birthday gift. It clicks like the stocker but it's not louder. Engine pulls steady to 8000 RPM now.
hey mar3,
do you have a 1st gen or a 2nd, because i have a second. do you know if the fuel pump will fit in a 2nd gen? does a 2nd gen have the same size fuel pump spot? thanks again

It's an '80...I'd have to look under a 2ndGen to see if it's even close. I'll take a stroll in my favorite rex boneyard this weekend to see if they're even close physically, pump-size-wise. Somebody else on this forum probably already knows the answer, let's hope they pipe up...
