Question What IS removeable under the hood???

Hi again. I'm bored and wanting to clean up the engine compartment, but I'm not sure what I can take out.
I've seen threads on here about cleaning up the engine bay, but not really much detail about it.
I'm doing this on a 12a motor in an '85.

Also, does removing anything help the motor at all???

Does it help the motor? Well, if it isn't there, it can't break down. There's also a lot of weight under the hood that doesn't have to be there. Do you have emissions testing to worry about?

Here's a link to a thread on my car. Might give you some ideas:

+ 1 on removing emmisions parts this will clean up your bay pleanty. In ct any car over 25 years old doesnt have to do emissions testing check the laws in your area. Also if you dont need/want ac all those parts can go also powersteering can be removed if you dont want it.Id kinda like to have it but it was removed from my car before i got it.

Thanks Kentetsu and Chino. I'm still not sure on how to remove these things. The power steering I would like to keep. The AC and the cruise control can go.

I don't have emissions where I live so maybe the names of a couple parts I could take off?

I've heard of a "rats nest", but honestly, the whole under hood of my car looks like a rats nest.

Anyways, thanks again and I hope to hear from some more people about what can go and what has to stay.

Look for an article titled "rat's nest removal" in the FAQ section...

It'll look alot less like a rats nest once you remove the mess. Theres a great tutorial for removing all non-essential emmisions components at www.mazspeed.com.

I never use my winshield washers, so I removed the bottle. You can remove the bottle for the hotstart assist as well. You can also minimize the wiring by removing all the diagnostic ports as well as stripping the carb down. I'm left with the headlight wiring and the alternator wiring, as well as three ground wires, which I only put on there because I have a grounding issue and I hate chasing electrical gremlins. You can move the battery to a rear storage bin, prefereably the right side to offset your weight, and remove the tray for it. That will tidy up that corner.

Also a bottle of Simple Green degreaser, some shop towels, and a little elbow grease and patience will get the engine bay looking like new when your finished pulling everything out. It's well worth the effort when it's all nice n shiny under there.
