Shit...Theres a lot of different models. Anyone want to compse a "good list" of all of them, where they were from, and what years they were made? I would do it, but I dont know enough about all the different ones. Maybe someone could start a list, then others could just add to it or edit it as it goes along?

US models addition...

GSL is '81-85 only. (Optional leather, standard 4-wheel disc and LSD along with power doodads)
There is the LS ('80 only) which is Leather Sport (special rims, leather interior)
And the LE ('83 only) which is various goodies (need help) and the 4x110 pattern 14" rims. Foglights maybe? I remember something Denny was telling me about getting a factory foglight switch, think it was from an LE.
and isn't there an anniversary edition in '83 as well?

In the US '79-80 is Series 1 (SA)
'81-83 is Series 2 (FB)
'84-85 is Series 3 (also FB)

Won't go into the differences here, except that '83 was kind of a hermaphrodite year... some of the S3 changes were made in '83, like different driveshaft/driveshaft bolt pattern, much lighter rotors in the engine, the awful water/oil cooler... think there's something else too. Oh yeah the clutch changed size too.

RXcetera 06-12-02 08:01 AM

Ok, I'll give this a shot. Here's what I know about the Japanese lineup.

RX-7's are introduced in 1978 as "Savanna RX-7's". It appears that mechanically all the cars where similar (drum rears, open diff, fender mirrors). Major differences between models are limited to paint jobs and interior trim levels). The interior of these cars is very similar to the US SA's. The line up in 78 is:

"GT " Fully loaded SA available with leather (luxury model). Available in many colors.

"Limited" Limited production models that feature funky paint jobs and 2 tone, plaid twill interiors. Available in Mica green, Yellow and Red.

"Custom and Super Custom" Dont know much about these. I assume they where the "regular" cars with custom and super custom reflecting their flexible option packages.

In 1980, the new models arrive. The revamped Savanna RX-7's now have the molded bumpers and available rear disks. Rotor shaped wheels are also availbale. This model change resembles the US "SA to FB" changes in 81. Models include the "GT", the "S-GT" and the "SE-limited". I beleive the SE-limited was the new top end model with disks all around, rotor wheels, lsd and 12A (similar to our 81-83 GSL). All these models still sport the fender mounted mirrors.

In 1983, the 12A turbo GT-X is added to the lineup. It's basically a US GSL-SE with the SE wheels, brakes and diff. It also has the SE steering wheel and shifter, but the dash and gauge cluster is the same as the 81-83 US FB's. This model (and probably all others) now have door mounted mirrors.

Japan never saw the FI 13B 1st gen. It appears that model was only offered in the US as an alternative to the more powerful (but less emissions friendly) 12A turbo. 13B RX-7's appeared in Japan with the introduction of the 1985 "new" Savanna RX-7 (2nd gen).

Hope this helps out with the model compilations :).

Woa! That's an EXTREMELY nice car you've got there. It's even got the side flashers and the headlamp washer jets!!! Would you happen to have a picture of the switch that activates those jets? I've got the jets, but I don't have the switch. TIA.

85RX7GS 06-12-02 08:44 AM

I forgot to add that I'm aiming to get that look, with the side flashers and the headlamp jets and the spoiler. Anyone have some side flashers?

DrKillJoY 06-12-02 09:46 AM

Count me in for 2.

I have a 1979 S model, I picked up to restore. Car has lots of miles 186k however only about 15k on new motor. Price = Free to a good home.

I also purchased a 1984 GSL-SE. Price = $500 Car has reasonable amount of miles about 100k, new Tokicos and CFDF clutch. It needs an engine however. Lucky me I have a nice 4 port 13B in my shed. :D

Also - I currently own a 1989 GTU, 1991 Coupe. In the past I have owned a 1986 GXL and a 1986 Sport.

Am I qualified ?

Thanks, its my first Rx7 needs a few bits sorting before I'm happy with it

I've not got any pictures of the washer switch but its built into the manual headlight pop up button

If i remember correctly you push the headlight pop up button to the first postion and the headlights pop up then you press it back again against a spring for the wash functio.

The switch is fitted to the centre console just infront of the gear stick and next to the heater rear screen switch

I have a picute of it in a broshure ... I'll try and get it scanned if that will help

Hmm, mine is a US 85 GS and the headlamp pop-up switch is up to the left of the speedometer cluster with the hazard lights. It only has two positions, in for the headlights up and out for the headlights down. I wonder if there is a version made for the 85 style interior? Anyone know?

i got my gsl-se for free:D ... well i traded my mint condition yellow 79(limited) with leather interior. it blew an engine seal, orignal engine, and the gears were fucked in the rear axel. i was so happy to get that 13b engine, untill i found out that the guy street ported the 79 and made it a gsl.:(

I have an 84 GSL-SE with leather everything, moonroof, the decked out factory clarion surround system 14 inch alloys, the whole boat. It is decent shape with 117,000 miles.

xxxHondaGuyxxx 03-10-03 04:43 PM

I have the very rare, prototype SGSGSL-SE-LE Ferrari-x7.

Came stock with 15" MotoForm wheels, 12" wooden steering wheel, rear hatch louvers, Testarossa side fins, front and rear fascia, and 10" tall whale tail wing.

Of course, I opted for the only available option, the chrome fender accents.

Before settling on the name "SGSGSL-SE-LE Ferrari-x7" they toyed with the name RX-7 PB.

Of course, PB is short for, yup.....you guessed it. Pep Boys.

RacerX7fb 03-10-03 07:13 PM

I'm on my 3rd and final GSL-SE...been fortunate to find clean ones for $1500 to 2000 :)

BRealistic 03-16-03 04:31 PM

Well, I would love to have a GSL-SE, or even a GSL- but my hieght (6ft 5) makes having an RX7 wihtout a sunroof important for me to even fit. I looked for 2nd gen RX7 SEs/GTus without sunroofs, just to see if I could fit because I know I can't fit in sunroof equiped models, but never even found one to try.
I have been looking for a year for a 1st/2nd gen RX7 with no sunroof and in very good mechanical shape and in my price range (under 2k$) and not embarrasing to be seen in. They are very hard to find. But even with the extra headroom, I need to watch for high speed bumps- I hit my head againt the headliner.:D

Just curious, on 1st gens were sunroofs standard on GSLs and GSL-SEs? Every one I have ever seen had one, so I was wondering.

TheTwinTurboRX-7 04-10-03 01:04 PM

Gots an upgraded GS to GSL specs but without the extra weight of accessories or sunroof.

stinkfist 04-11-03 02:06 PM

just to let everyone know, i am officially out of the closet.
and i am dating a eithiopian boy at work, I'll let everyone know when i'm available.

redrx 04-11-03 03:16 PM

I finally got the majority of the parts for my 85 GS (46k org. miles when I bought it about 85k now)- Full racing beat exhaust, extra carb to send to yaw, fuel pump, regulator, electric fan, msd ignition, plugs, wires, coils- apparently I should have about 150hp when im done, the car is still complely stock- im waiting for emissions the car runs great and has new paint, no dents, very nice interior- ive loved it ever since i got it in 2000

Mills 04-11-03 05:19 PM

I'm lucky enough to be piloting the prettiest '85 GSL-SE made :bootyshak
Send me email addresses and I'll send pictures to prove it!

Random 05-28-03 03:34 PM

84 GSL-SE, 160k miles. Well used. :)

The fb mailing list has a high proportion of -SE owners too, for the same reasons as previously stated, IMO.

Sk8r_dude 07-30-03 03:37 PM

ive owned 3 a gs, a gls, and a gls-se, but the gls with the gls-se engine in its the only one worth talking about... as for the gls-se, i found in it the buy and sell!

MosesX605 07-31-03 07:24 PM

Proud owner of a '79 GS model, fully loaded with all options except sun roof. It's a good thing too, because I wouldn't fit with my helmet on if I had the roof and my FC seats installed. ;) My '79 is a bit of a Franken-rex, with a '81 electronic dizzy, '86 FC seats, '81 GSL axle and LSD and '81-'85 alloy wheels. The odo reads 105980 miles.

pjr 08-01-03 10:33 AM

I have a GSL-SE... 79K miles, purchased last year from the original west coast owner. All original: No power steering, mirrors that match the white body, glass roof, no leather. I'm planning to add white powder coated wheels next year.

kuhlrx7 08-09-03 04:03 PM

mine started life as a 79 sport gt( limited edition) and it is very hard to belive there are 13 of them on this board and only 8 83 le. the 79 le had all options + a dealer sport pkg duck tail rear spoler and a 79 only imsa style air dam so come clean guys who realy has the 79 le? I realy cant call mine that now with the pacific body pkg differant supen, dash, seats, 88ae wiring, jdm engine 13b turbo, and lots and lotsof other upgrades. or wait may be I can its a 79 very limited edition.

kuhlrx7 09-20-03 07:52 PM

wow I replied to this 8-09-03 and it comes up as new today 9-20-03 go figure?

LtED83 10-30-03 01:55 PM

I got 2... 83 GS, and 83 limited ed. The limited ed is what I use as a daily driver.

fstfrbrd 10-30-03 06:06 PM

i have the 84 gslse got i for 850. i bought it 2 months ago and still dont have plates on it yet. each time i go to get it inspected the thang breaks first the bin rust then one injector broke know i have to rebuild the the motor

Aviator 902S 10-31-03 07:53 PM

Mine's an '85 GSL limited edition (ie: NOT 13B-powered, but with all GSL options plus power steering. This one's originally from California so no headlight washer jets. (Even the SE in the US didn't have these--- only in Canada, Australia, Europe...)
My other three were '81 and '82 GX's. (only the '82 and '83 actually had the GX badge, but the '81 was identical otherwise) That's what GSL's were called in Canada until the '84's came out.
At the time they were the top of the line 7 (no SE yet) and came standard with sunroof, washer jets, LSD, power everything, and 4-wheel discs (solid at rear). Only items considered optional were leather and air. Power steering was not available until '84 (and then only in the states) as far as I know.

oni-dori 11-01-03 09:01 PM

i got an 82 gs bought last month. i try not to turn it into a daily driver but i just cant help it:). runs really well though. planning on a gsl rear end next year. and whatever else i can think of after that.

Terror7 11-02-03 01:52 AM

Hey over here in oz we just got S1, 2, 3, all with different optionss. No gsl-se or anything, you guys get all the plusses over there. In my expierience, every 1 is different cos evry1 modifys them to some degree. only badges that are on them all are MAZDA & Rx7. thats it.

All of the GSL's and GSL-SE's came with sun roofs, but the optional smoked glass roof panel provides more approx. 1 inch (2-1/2) cm more headroom than the stock uphoulstered one does.
This may still be a problem if the top of your head touches right on the perimiter of the sunroof frame, since the clearance provided by the glass panel only extends to its own dimensions.
I wonder if any of the aftermarket racing seats provide a lower seating position...
