Yes i would like to know this also. Besides both axels turning in sync, how else could you test the rear to see if it's a little tired? What if it was off the car and had no wheels?

Get the Limited slip Diff. Look for the obvious like disc brakes. The GSL has 4 lug disc with the same gear ratio as the GS drum rear and supposed to be stronger than the GSL-SE rear. The GSL-SE has 5 lug disc LSD and supposed to be a lower gear ratio, but not as strong as the GSL?

Both are the same strength.
Both are 4 lug. GSL as are all 12A car diffs, is 4 x 110 mm bolt pattern... GSL-SE is 4 x 114.3 mm or 4 x 4.5 inch.
Torque transfer capability is affected because the GSL has two clutch plates. The SE has 1.
Additions:
GSL as are all 12A car diffs, is 3.909:1 ring and pinion. GSL-SE is 4.10:1
GSL has 9 inch solid rotors. GSL-SE has 10 inch vented rotors.
However this thread, I believe is about how to see if one's good, when it's lying on the garage floor... Supose you walk into a warehouse or storage locker and there's several diffs there. Which one do you grab?

You'll have to look into the diff carrier and see clutch plates. I guess it'll be hard to describe as I've not looked inside one, but would probably be able to tell you if I had an open and LSD pig in front of me.
Look at the ring gear for obvious pitting or any blue discoloration... Turn the pinion while holding the ring gear and feel for lots of play.
Also know that 84-85 diffs are all compatible. They use a large style axle and have thier own driveshaft flange.
1979-1982 diffs use a smaller axle... 1983 diffs are the same, but they'll need the driveshaft flange swapped over, as they use the 84/85 style driveshaft.
Or maybe I have that backwards and 83 has the larger axle and the early driveshaft flange.
