What the Heck Do These Things Do??? *PICS*
"superclean hidden wire engine bay like the Aussies do it!"
we still have a ***** load of wires and crap in ours!
and yeah.. you dont see any nice 'showroom' engines with all the little annoying wires in them, so you 'MUST' be able to take them out (or move them all behind a nicee black cover or something!
-Cheers

Wow, you brought this sucker back from the dead DF.
I'm still curious about some of the stuff that I put in the original post. I yanked the majority of it out, with no majorly ill effects. I still have all the wiring there just in case though....

I'm in the process of cleaning and painting under the hood too. The car is an 85 GS auto that will be getting a 5-speed. Emissions have already been removed per the Rats Nest Removal tutorial.
I've spent some time studying the wiring diagrams in the factory manual. Since I'm getting rid of the emissions, auto trans, and cruise control, there is a TON of stuff that can be eliminated. The attached document lists the parts I believe COULD BE eliminated. The first column lists the part, the second column gives the approximate locations, and the third column lists the color code for each wire going to the part.
Hope this helps.

I'm going to be cleaning my engine bay out and probably re-wiring alot of the loom this summer.. I'm going to archive this thread as it is now and hopefully we'll be able to keep adding to the active one

Getting Rid of the Clutter
I suggest you all read the writeups on Granny's web site for the V8 conversions. There is a lot of good info on what the various wires are for, what you need and what you can delete. On my carbureted 84 GSLs, of which I have two, (same as 85) the main wire bundle on the right side of the firewall had, as I recall, 17 wires. On the 12a powered car I used 6 of them. I just put labels on the ones I could figure out (temp sensor for the choke release, alternator, etc). I removed all the tape, stripped out all the unused wires and wrapped them in a plastic bag, tied it out of the way and then drove it that way for a few months until I was sure everything was working properly. Then I cut off the unused wires.
For the V8 powered car, I used essentially the same wires, but I still left the extras in place for a while. By the way, I use the cruise control on both cars. The only electrical component I am aware of for the cruise control is the little box behind the driver's seat.
