what does the clip in the shifter socket do?

I just got a fresh tranny and when I was about to install the shifter I noticed a metal clip inside of the hole that seems to be loged in there, and I don;t know what it does. I bolted it together and it seemed to shift fine even with this peice of metal hanging around the socket where the shifter bolts in. Any idea what the metal clip is for?

It centers the shifter. Most of the trannys I have, the springs are broken.

if there broken its not that hard to fix(usually) what happens is the springs pop off the shiter itself so u goatta pull the stick out of the tranny and rehook the clip to the stick(easier to explain with picture) theres alittle slot that the pins sit in on either side of the stick on for 1st and the other for 5th to snap the shifter to center
