I was wondering what kind of modifacations you can do to a 1982 rx-7, to make it faster. I have the standard engine in it. Price wise would it be cheaper putting in a chevy 350 small block and will it hook up right.

 

Then why not just put that 350 in aChevette stay GM.

 

All advocates of the "V8 in an RX-7" concept need to be shot in the nuts. If you want to make it faster, go with a 13B single turbo setup, not a perfect weight balancing destroying V8.

 

there are tons of easy mods. Racing Beat exhaust system frees up huge amounts of HP, a less restrictive intake (custom CAI or K&N drop-in) will get air into the carb quicker and with less restriction, swapping out the stock carb for a high performance one, etc. etc....


These can be done in stages, not an all-or-nothing commitment to your time and wallet like an engine/tranny/rear end V-8 swap

SO,,,you wanna go fast in your 7 ..??? Well how much money you invest is how fast you will go.. get-it ?? If you've got tons of bucks and are smart you could go with a 13b turbo. the people here who have done that are a different breed of people. PURIST's there's a lot of **** to do and buy to make a 1st gen haul *****.
It would be safe to say about $ 3.000 grand would take care of it.I'M gonna get-it for this,,,An american V8 would fit perfect, ford/chevy and under the hood too.
A 5.0 ford,,,cool A 5.7 (350) 4 bolt with 194's or 202's.
Me,, I'd go 327 solid lift ,, very cool,, but i'm a ford head,, so either a 5.0,, or, 289/271 hi-po or a 351 C 4V . I would wet myself to see a 1st gen with a 427 side oiler, hi-riser
with of coarse everything cobra LaMans. It could be bought for $ 5.000 grand in the crate from ford power parts here in california.of coarse the 2 660 center squirters would be sticking out of the hood by about a foot. you'd need a 9 inch ford rear, hacked, tubed frame,
tubed wheel wells, a lenco 5 speed, wheelie bars, steel nuts,no children, no wife, nuts of steel,, (did i say that again) get the picture,,,I can see it.. Oh i almost forgot to mention,,you'll need an ejection seat too... Lol

Probably the best "bang for the buck" mod would be the Racing Beat catalytic convertor replacement pipe. I put one on my '82 S and was shocked and how much of a difference it made. The pipe is $90 and the gaskets are $12 (replace 'em, DO IT!) but the thing weighs ten pounds and could survive a nuke attack. While most here seem to hate it, if you want ***** out power with minimal tuning or reliability issues, the V8 is the way to go..

Sure, a V-8 will give you loads of torque and be fast in a straight line, but what happens when you lift in a corner?
What happens to the weight distribution when you put in a V-8?
How about the gas mileage?
Okay, so that's not the best example.

The rotary engine has more going on than just horsepower, if people can't see that, then they SHOULD bastardize their RX7 with a V-8.



...as long as it's a Boss 302.

come on now. v8 is a good option if youve got one laying around. i wouldnt touch the heavy chevy, but a 302 swap is great. the weight distribution is really close once you move the battery to back and get aluminum heads and what not. parts are easy and cheap to come by and tuners are wayyyy easier to come by for holleys or even stang efi setups. mike hows your tuning coming?
keep flamin the v8, but if it werent for hotrodders back in the day with their pistons, we wouldnt be here. so have a little respect for your ancestors :-P
dont talk about the weight of a v8 being way off til youve ridden in one. kerrys car feels damn nice with a 302 in it.

chevy 3.1 v 6 out of a lumina, its light , and will give lots of power to weight ratio ... but I will not give up
on the 12a, besides whats the speed limit ? .....

does anyone else hear a v8 debate coming on? i know i do so im goign to keep my mouth shut and ignore this thread...

 

the v8 debate is pointless, most poeple here like me think its dumb and ruins the weight balance of the car, and others think its cool. Nothing anyone on here can say will change anyones mind. I don't why they even bother to try.

 

I agree about the V8 debate. the only reason why I said anthing is because I havent said anyhting before... figured I would bitch al least once.

 

If you are going to go 6 cylinder go 4.3 Chevy or 3.8 Buick Turbo. Sometimes I wish I had kept my car rotary but ah well. Just a question... wouldn't an intercooler/bigger 13B/ turbo's etc. throw off the balance as well? I suggest unless you have fabrication skills and determination stick with the rotary and get a nifty RB exhaust.
