What is that black stuff?

the black dust that is in the tail pipe, is it what causes the carbon lock up in our cars, or is it unspent gas, and what do you do to repair the soot problems....

Well, since it's in the tailpipe, I doubt it would cause carbon lock since it has already exited the engine, but that stuff can get caught up in the engine before getting out into the exhaust and cause carbon lock.

Just wondering.. if the air/fuel mixture is set correctly, should the inside of the exhaust pipes have a "medium gray" appearance?
