Werid but constant issue with gsl-se

I have a 85 GSL-SE with 126k on her. Its stock -custom exhaust, but stock manifold. I have an issue with, on cold starts when I start it, it revs to 1500 like its going to go in cold start mode and then it dies. But second time I start it never does it again and idle is perfect...I can give it a little gas before it dies and it will stay running and the idle smooths out. I just think its kinda a weird and dont know where to start looking to fix this problem

are you putting the pedal to the floor one FULL time before you start? That engages the fast idle cam so it doesn't sputter out and croak.

Also, when you start it the 2nd time, does it go to 1500 RPM or does it try to go to 800 RPM (and you feather the throttle to keep it running)?

It sounds like either your fast idle cam is not engaging or just barely engages the 1st time and doesn't engage the 2nd time (out of adjustment).

Make sure that the fast idle is set up properly like the FSM says. You need to turn the fast idle screw until the mark on the cam is about center on the cam roller. This is best done at about 80 degrees. From my experience, when the throttle body is working properly and the fast idle is set, I never had to step on the throttle to force the car into fast idle. But of course doing this doesn't hurt anything. I know in really cold weather some people need to press the accelerator once.
