weird rattling noise from rear
someone please help me out here. whenever i go over bumps i hear a rattling noise coming from the rear of the car. i looked around, checked the jack, tail lights, antenna, and other crap but cant figure out what it is. when i pay more attention to it, it sounds like its coming from the passenger side in the rear... or it could possibly be somewhere behind the passenger seat. it sounds like its in the body somewhere, but i have no clue what it could be. its so loud, i think it should be obvious whats wrong. has anyone ever had a problem with this before, or maybe some suggestions?

thanks, but i replaced my shocks and bushings about 5-7k miles ago, could they be making the noise? i also poked around the muffler and the exhaust, couldnt find anything that was loose. is there anything inside the body panels behind the passenger that could be rattling?

mine does the EXACT same thing.
it seems to vary with speed/rpm (cant really tell which, cause the car is loud...lol) But its definately passenger side rear.
i know its not the shocks... maybe the muffler, but its a ******* annoying noise, and loud from the outside of the car so i'm told.
i just re-did the whole rear suspension, so i'm sure its nothing in there, cause it did it with the drum rear and now againw/ the disc rear.
i was JUST about to post a thread on this. Maybe we can get a definitive answer.

well i know all the screws are tight on the hatch and the locking mechanism is tight, thats the first place i looked. i'm running out of ideas here, i'll have to check out the shocks tomorrow even though they arnt all that old. but it would make sence, cuz i hear the noise everytime i go over bumps on this slow back road.

Yeah, mine does the same, definately more under load. Thought it as the muffler but I replaced it and the noise is still there.
I have looked everywhere I am out of ideas as well.

yeah its almost like when there is NO load on the driveline, accel or decel... that the noise stops.
i only ever hear it in 1st/2nd when driving slowly around town without my stereo on... which explains why i dont hear it much, but recently with my fucked up alternator, i've not had my stereo on unless i'm on the hwy with sustained high RPM ( goddamn ******* stupid alternator). So i started to realize exactly how bad it is...
and its pretty bad.

Is it a pretty heavy rattle? As in a lot of mass behind the contact? If so I'd put my money on a broken link on one end of your rear stabilizer bar. My car had that problem and I never did figure it out until I was underneath my project car and saw the bushing for the bar... Then the light went on.

i have a loud rattling noise also from the rear.....but it happens whenever im rolling down the road...and it gets louder as i accelerate......i jacked the year end off the ground so that i had both of the tires off of the ground and drove the car in first gear.....i heard the noise while doing this and it was very very loud.....if come to the conclusion that i think its the rear differential or where the driveshaft connects.....anyone have any advice on that
i was posting this b/c it started out by just hitting bumps...and it wasnt that loud....then it started to get worse and worse...and now i cant drive the car b/c im afraid of ruining it and i dont want to ruin my baby......i hope that this can help u out a little bit....try and jack the rear off the ground do what i did and see if u here the noise...b/c it might or might not be the same issue.....

When I first got my car, I had this crazy rattling coming from the rear. I checked EVERYTHING... I had my father check EVERYTHING... I had several mechanics check EVERYTHING...
Nobody found anything everyone wanted to be checked into a mental institution or have their hearing checked...
It turned out to be a golf ball hiding in the little area between the tail lights.
I chucked that bitch into the back yard as hard as I could and ran it over with the lawnmower.

Seriously, **** in your car can cause rattles... Half the time anyone came to the shop with rattles, it could be attributed to something rolling around in the cargo space... Especially since it's inside the car, it seems so ******* loud.

well i'm pretty sure i dont have any golf *****, i'll have to check around the rear some more. i'm going to check in the back, under the spare, and the shocks, and the rear diff. i had the oil in the rear changed a while back just for the hell of it, i hope it didnt mess anything up. when i changed the oil in the trans it caused second and third to not synchronize, it was a bitch, i had the damn thing rebuilt 7 times!

hey i was just under the car again today and im starting to think that my problem isnt the rear differential....but i was checking the shields under the car that are supposed to protect the driveshaft from anything that could bounce and hit it from the road....well i noticed that there are a couple that are actually rubbing the driveshaft...i bent some of them outta the way but i need to remove the exhaust to remove another one thats rubbing it the worst....
maybe the problem is that when u hit the bump the muffler bounces upward and hits the drivetrain which would cause a loud rubbing or rattling noise b/c the shields are just made of sheet metal......try and check if you have any of that shielding rubbing or if the driveshaft has any markings on it that show that its rubbing something...hopefully some of this helps

I had the same problem
When I was test driving my car, I had the clanging metal rattling noise. He said he didn't know what it was. So I had a look around with him, and saw that the piece of metal that tightens to the spare tire was loose. He didn't see it and I used the noise to drop the price. Just tighten up the nut on your spare tire mount.

no spare tire... no mount i wish it were something simple like that.

This is in response to the original post where you stated it was bump related. I have a bump related clunk or whatever. In my case it is the sunroof. I have a little play where it connects to the crank. Once i close the sunroof or take it off the noise stops. The strange thing is that it sounds like it comes from the rear of the vehicle. Just another possibility.
