Weird problem

I have a 12a first gen that doesn't seem to want to start. First of all, I had a minor accident and had to park the car for a while whilst I fixed the body. Then the battery gave out. I bought a new battery and it was still working. I haven't run it now for three months and suddenly today I tried to turn the key. It couldn't start.

It gave out a noise like a switch or something and the lights on the panel with the speedometer and everything else just died. Then I tried again but it was as if the battery was completely dead.
I went to the battery and took of the negative terminal and then put it back on. Went back into the car. It was registering the battery again. Tried to start it again and the same problem.
I think the "switch" sound I hear each time I try to start the car is due to the sparkplugs. Im gonna have to check all this.

Is there some sort of cut off switch.
What could possibly be wrong?
Anyone have any ideas?
Any help would be seriously appreciated.

I went through the same thing, and all I had to do was replace the terminals on my cables...ya know, the clamps.

I had the same problem as well, ended up replacing both battery cables, cleaning connections and grounds, etc. Fixed it perfectly.

Theres obviously a short somewhere, which can be casued by a bad connection. So I am 100% sure, its the cables!
