Wedge brakes

I'm rebuilding a 79 model car, and I am swapping to later model struts.

I've never seen wedge type calipers, but the ones on this car look pretty much identical to the 81-83 calipers I have. They do have the old style thread pitch for the brake lines.

So, I'm guessing that at some point the calipers were changed to '80 model calipers - sliding pin style with early style thread pitch.

Anybody have pics of the wedge style calipers, or a description of how they are different? Are the caliper brackets different for wedge brakes?

Thanks,
Neil

My understanding is the 79 wedgies are directly swappable with the 80 updated versions of the calipers. In other words, the 80 caliper will bolt right on. AFAIK the 81+ calipers will NOT fit the 79-80 strut, if that is your question. Using the 80 version of the caliper will allow you to use the thread-pitch hoses off your 79 as well as your original struts. Using the 81+ version might force you to swap everything right up to (and including) the brake cylinder to get the thread to match up...??

IIRC Mazdatrix or RX7.com sells conversion hoses with the two different thread pitches on either end. This'll allow you to use late calipers on the older car.

someone probably swapped them.
I have seen quite a few 79 cars without wedge type brakes.
I just assume that not all 79's had wedge brakes.

the are totally differnt. You would immediately knwo if you saw them.

if your calipers like like most other calipers you have ever seen then you dont have wedge type

Cool. Thanks.

Looks like I don't have to source new calipers for the build up!
